Hawaii clinical placements for Olivet Nazarene students
Hawaii is approved for Olivet Nazarene University FNP practicum hours, so nurses in Honolulu, Kahului-Wailuku and Hilo-Kailua can train where they live. Hawaii on Olivet's lists
An approved result lets Hawaii residents in the Olivet FNP complete practicum hours on the islands. Hawaii students in the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate should put the question to the SON Clinical Coordinator, since the file leaves that program out. For NEL students the rule is an approved state with no list published, and RN-BSN practicum hours stay in your own island community.

A Hawaii license, not a compact privilege
NCSBN's list of compact jurisdictions leaves Hawaii out, and no bill to join is pending. A multistate license from the mainland therefore grants no practice privilege on the islands; Hawaii nurses practice on a Hawaii-issued license. That fits Olivet's expectation that each clinical day happens in person under an unencumbered, current RN license good in the state hosting it, as your RN license for clinicals explains.
If you are relocating to Hawaii during the program, apply for the Hawaii license well before your next clinical course and tell the Online Advising Team your new address, as described in moving during your program. Hawaii also has no APRN Compact law.
What Hawaii's board says about programs based elsewhere
Hawaii's Board of Nursing is part of the Professional and Vocational Licensing Division at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. For RN-BSN, LPN-RN and similar post-licensure programs taught online from another state, its published FAQ is short: with no Hawaii campus, Olivet files no application and sends the board no notice. Olivet faculty would need a Hawaii license only if they came to Hawaii to teach or precept you in person.
The board treats pre-licensure students differently. Its Education Committee, meeting in September 2016, ruled out clinical placements in Hawaii for a pre-license student from a mainland BSN program. Olivet's Traditional BSN is taught on the Bourbonnais campus, so that ruling rarely touches Olivet students. Graduate APRN programs get no specific mention in Hawaii's guidance, which is why a site's question about Olivet's standing belongs with the SON Clinical Coordinator.
Where Hawaii nurses look for preceptors
Nearly 989,000 people live in Urban Honolulu, by far Hawaii's largest metro. Kahului-Wailuku is home to about 161,000, and roughly 210,000 live in the Hilo-Kailua micropolitan area. On Olivet students' shortlists you will find Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, The Queen's Health Systems, Hawaii Pacific Health (its hospitals include Straub, Wilcox, Kapiolani and Pali Momi) and HHSC (Hawaii Health Systems Corporation); every system publishes separate student terms. With AANP's full practice rating, a Hawaii NP preceptor needs no physician agreement to practice.
Act 43 of 2018 created Hawaii's Healthcare Preceptor Income Tax Credit, codified as HRS 235-110.25. Physicians, pharmacists and APRNs who live in Hawaii and practice primary care there can claim it for unpaid rotations certified by the state Department of Health, up to a yearly limit. For APRN students, though, it counts only programs accredited or located in Hawaii where Hawaii residents make up most of the class. An Olivet rotation falls outside that, so preceptors should not plan on the credit.

Can Olivet FNP students do clinicals in Hawaii?
Yes. Hawaii carries an approved rating in Olivet's March 12, 2026 FNP file. Because Hawaii is not a compact state, you train on a Hawaii RN license, and no hours count until Olivet approves the preceptor. Certificate students confirm their track's status with the SON Clinical Coordinator before signing anyone.
Does the Hawaii board need to approve Olivet's online RN-BSN?
Not according to its FAQ. Olivet's online programs have no Hawaii campus, and for schools like that Hawaii's board offers no approval process at the post-licensure level, naming RN-BSN programs as one example; no notice to the board is needed either. Olivet has its RN-BSN students complete practicum hours in their home communities, so a Hawaii student trains in Hawaii.
Could the SON Clinical Coordinator place me on a different island?
It is possible. Olivet's FNP page says that after 30 unsuccessful attempts the SON Clinical Coordinator uses the school's resources, and the site may be outside your preferred location. In Hawaii that could mean another island. The 30-attempt rule page explains what counts as an attempt.
Is there a Hawaii incentive for precepting an Olivet student?
The Hawaii credit only recognizes rotations for students from a program accredited in or based in Hawaii whose enrollment is mostly Hawaii residents. Olivet is an Illinois school, so your rotation sits outside that definition and your preceptor should not count on the credit.
