Can't find a preceptor for your Olivet clinical course
Olivet Nazarene University asks online graduate nursing students to source their first preceptor through people they already know, and it publishes no preceptor list to fall back on. When that network runs dry, three routes remain: widen the search yourself, reach the SON Clinical Coordinator's help, or hand the search to a placement service built around Olivet's rules.

Where a stalled search stands under Olivet's rules
Three of Olivet's program pages, for the FNP master's, the FNP certificate and the NEL master's, give the same first instruction: use your personal and professional networks to find both the preceptor and the practicum site. Whoever you find still has to be approved by Olivet, and FNP hours have to be logged in one of Olivet's approved states.
What comes after the network depends on your track, and Olivet's pages word it differently. The FNP page brings in the SON Clinical Coordinator once a student has made 30 unsuccessful attempts. The certificate and NEL pages promise the coordinator's substantial support with no number attached. Ask the coordinator which wording governs your track; the 30-attempt rule page lays the two versions out.
RN-BSN students who began core courses before August 2026 are told to obtain their own preceptor and agency, while Traditional BSN students on the Bourbonnais campus have every clinical assigned and may not contact sites themselves.
Why Olivet students get stuck
A stalled search almost always has a nameable cause, and naming it tells you where to push next.
- The patient population is narrow. Each FNP clinical asks for one group: adults and older adults in
NRSG 636C, women's health inNRSG 637C, children inNRSG 638C, patients of every age inNRSG 639C. A colleague whose panel is all adults cannot carry the pediatric course. - The state is on the wrong list. Olivet rules out FNP hours in the 13 states on its Not Approved list, and that holds even for a student who lives in an approved state next door. Olivet's licensure disclosures show both lists.
- Big systems work school by school. Kankakee's Riverside Healthcare accepts NP students solely from schools that have signed an affiliation agreement with it, and allows at least 90 days to set a new one up. Northwestern Medicine's north and northwest region places only applicants from schools with a current agreement.
- Women's health is scarce. Riverside's page says the women's health rotations run by Riverside Medical Group are closed indefinitely, which tightens

The coordinator route, and what it trades
When the SON Clinical Coordinator takes over, Olivet's FNP page says the coordinator uses Olivet's own resources and contacts, and it warns that the site may sit outside your preferred location. For a student in the south suburbs that might mean a longer drive; for a student in a large rural state it could mean far more.
Olivet publishes no timeline for this route either: no approval time, no placement deadline and no count of open sites. It means that waiting for attempt thirty before trying anything else can burn weeks you will want back once the course opens.
Your own search, the coordinator's help and ours can all be working at once, and whichever preceptor Olivet approves first becomes yours. The options compared page weighs each route.
When the start date is getting close
Olivet's online course week runs Monday to Sunday on Central time, and clinical hours have to fit inside the course dates. The drug screen has to come back clear between two and four weeks ahead of the practicum, so a preceptor found in the final week before the course opens leaves you racing the compliance calendar as well as the hours you owe.

Olivet keeps no public preceptor directory. A classmate's former preceptor or a name from a forum is a lead to verify, not a placement.

Does Olivet give nursing students a list of preceptors?
Olivet's program pages and handbooks publish no preceptor list or site database. Graduate students begin with their own networks, and the SON Clinical Coordinator adds help, after 30 attempts on the FNP page and with no stated threshold on the PG-APRN and MSN-NEL pages. A placement service is the other way to reach preceptors you do not already know.
Should I apply to Riverside or Northwestern Medicine on my own?
Both publish their own rules. Riverside places NP students only from programs with a Riverside affiliation agreement, through its GME department's online application, and tells students not to send requests by email. Northwestern's north and northwest region places only applicants from schools with a current agreement. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator whether Olivet holds one before you apply.
Can I do my FNP clinical in a neighboring state if mine has no preceptors?
Only if that state is on Olivet's approved list. Olivet bars FNP practicum hours from all 13 states on its Not Approved list, even when the student lives in an approved state. Kansas sits on the approved list but carries extra requirements; Olivet routes those questions to FNPpracticum@olivet.edu.
Can I start my clinical course without a preceptor?
Olivet's handbooks want compliance finished before you start and every hour documented by the course's final day. Without an approved preceptor there is nowhere to earn those hours, so speak with the SON Clinical Coordinator and your course faculty before the course opens.
Does it matter whether I'm in the new or current curriculum?
Yes, for the course numbers and hours you search against. New-curriculum FNP students have four clinicals of 135 or 240 hours; continuing students have six of 120 to 125. The compliance system differs as well: the new handbook names Verified Credentials QualifiedFirst and the current one names CastleBranch. Ask your advisor which applies to you.
