Preceptors Around Kankakee and Chicagoland
Olivet Nazarene University sits in Bourbonnais, about 50 miles south of Chicago's Loop, so its local online students search three kinds of ground: Kankakee County itself, the suburbs in between, and the city with its large health systems. Each has its own shortage designations, placement channels and commute trade-offs, and the best fit depends on which Olivet course you need to fill.

Kankakee County: high primary care need close to home
Federal shortage data describe a county that needs primary care. HRSA lists a low-income population primary care Health Professional Shortage Area covering Kankakee County, in place since 2018. For mental health, the county sits inside a low-income designation shared with Grundy and Will counties, added in February 2026, while an older geographic designation for the same three counties, the Madden area, is proposed for withdrawal.
Two community health centers also hold facility designations. Kankakee Community Health Center carries a primary care shortage score of 19, and Community Health Partnership of Illinois sites in Kankakee, including a mobile medical and dental van, score 21. Those scores describe patient need, which is exactly what an FNP primary care clinical is built around. Whether a center hosts NP students is its own decision, so treat them as places to ask, not places that have said yes.
Kankakee's two hospitals
Riverside Healthcare is the larger system in town, and it publishes a formal NP student process run by its Graduate Medical Education department. It requires an affiliation agreement with the student's school, places students in order of application and has closed Riverside Medical Group's women's health rotations indefinitely. Olivet's website does have a Riverside partnership page, but it describes employee benefits and education, not clinical rotations for Olivet students, so ask the SON Clinical Coordinator before reading anything into it.
St. Mary's Hospital Kankakee, formerly Ascension Saint Mary and now part of Prime Healthcare, is the town's second hospital. If you have colleagues there, it is a natural stop for the network search Olivet asks you to run, starting with a clinician who already knows your work.

The right part of the map depends on the course. A primary care clinical with adults can be filled in many settings; a pediatric or women's health clinical narrows the search to practices whose own patients match.

Between Bourbonnais and the city
The south suburbs and Will County sit between campus and Chicago, and for many Olivet students they are the practical middle ground: more practices than Kankakee County alone, without a daily drive into the city. Will County shares the low-income mental health shortage designation with Kankakee and Grundy, a reminder that the need stretches north of the county line.
Commute distance is yours to set. Olivet's graduate pages ask for practicum hours in your local area but name no mileage limit, while its Traditional BSN handbook describes assigned campus clinical sites up to about 90 minutes from Bourbonnais, which gives a sense of how far the region's clinical footprint reaches. Tell your placement advisor how far you will drive for each course, since a long clinical day plus a long drive adds up fast.
Chicago and the collar counties
Chicago's large systems publish their student processes differently. Northwestern Medicine's north and northwest region, covering sites such as Huntley, Lake Forest and Grayslake, McHenry and Woodstock, runs a monthly APRN application limited to schools with a current affiliation agreement and suggests keeping a backup site. Rush's public page covers undergraduate and CNA group rotations at Rush Oak Park Hospital, and UChicago Medicine's nursing student page covers its extern and intern programs.
That makes the city a place where independent practices, community clinics and preceptors reached through personal introductions matter as much as posted applications. Downstate and across the state line
Not every Olivet student in Illinois lives near Chicago. OSF HealthCare takes APRN student requests through its own advanced practice inbox, and Carle Health runs an online Clinical Rotation Application for Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria, where it says an application does not assure a rotation.
Students near the border have a second option: Indiana and Wisconsin are both on Olivet's approved list for FNP practicum hours, as are Iowa, Missouri and Kentucky. A northwest Indiana practice can be closer than a Chicago one. Indiana is on Olivet's approved list for FNP practicum hours, so a practice across the state line can work if Olivet approves the preceptor. How far should I be willing to drive for an Olivet clinical?
Olivet asks for graduate practicum hours in your local area without naming a mileage limit, so the answer is yours. Weigh the length of the clinical day against the drive: a practice an hour away that fits your course well often beats a closer one with the wrong patient mix. Tell us your limit for each course.

For NRSG 620, look to nurse educators in nursing programs and hospital education departments, and to nurse leaders and managers in local health systems. For NRSG 604, look to settings that serve population health needs, such as those in the county's shortage areas. Every preceptor still goes through Olivet's approval.

No. St. Mary's Hospital Kankakee, formerly Ascension Saint Mary, is now part of Prime Healthcare.
