The 30-attempt rule: when Olivet's SON Clinical Coordinator steps in for FNP students

Olivet Nazarene University's MSN Family Nurse Practitioner page asks you to search through your own network first, then adds that the SON Clinical Coordinator helps if you cannot secure a preceptor after 30 attempts. The rule is one sentence long, and it leaves three questions open: which tracks it covers, what an attempt is, and where the coordinator's site will be.

The rule as Olivet's FNP page states it

The FNP program page sets the rule out in three parts. Students are first encouraged to lean on people they know, personally and professionally, to find a preceptor and a practicum site. A student who is "unable to secure a preceptor after 30 attempts" then gets help from the School of Nursing Clinical Coordinator, who draws on the school's resources and networks. And the page warns that a placement found that way may be outside the student's preferred location.

Read together, the parts set a clear order. The search is yours to start, the coordinator is a fallback with a numbered trigger, and the fallback trades some say over location for help finding a site. How to request that help is not spelled out on the page, so ask the coordinator or check your Canvas requirements course. The finding your own preceptor page covers the first stage in depth.

Which Olivet tracks the threshold covers

Only one program page puts a number on the search. The Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate page and the MSN Nursing Education & Leadership page open with the same network-first sentence, then describe substantial support or substantial assistance from the Clinical Coordinator without any attempt count. That is a real difference in wording between Olivet's own pages, and none of them explains it.

Certificate students take the same four clinical courses as MSN FNP students, NRSG 636C through NRSG 639C, so it is fair to ask whether the count applies to them too. The Post-Graduate FNP certificate page covers that track. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator or the FNP/PG-APRN Program Director which reading governs you, and keep the reply in writing.

What counts as an attempt: Olivet does not say

The FNP page gives the number but not the unit. Olivet does not define an attempt anywhere on its public pages, so a student can count very differently from the coordinator. Get answers to these from the SON Clinical Coordinator before trusting your own tally:

Does an unanswered message count, or only a clear no?
Is each clinician one attempt, or each clinic or health system?
If a preceptor agrees and the site then declines to onboard you, is that one attempt or two?
Do contacts in a state where Olivet bars FNP hours count at all?
Does an attempt made for one clinical course carry over to the next?
What record of your attempts will the coordinator want to see?

Until you have answers, log every contact as if someone will review it: the date, the practice, the population it serves, how you reached out and the result. A log like that helps either way. It shows the coordinator a genuine search, and it shows you where your list is thin. The SON Clinical Coordinator page covers what else to bring when you ask for help.

Olivet does not define an attempt. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator how to count and document yours before you reach 30, not after.

Why the coordinator's site may not be where you want it

The FNP page says plainly that a coordinator placement may fall outside your preferred location, and the reason follows from how the fallback works. The coordinator is searching the school's resources and networks for a site with room, not searching your neighborhood for a site near you. Olivet is based in Bourbonnais, Illinois, its online FNP students live in many states, and Olivet publishes no list showing where its networks reach.

Two limits narrow the choice further. The site must still be in a state where Olivet allows FNP practicum hours, and the 13 not-approved states stay closed even to students who live in an approved one; the licensure disclosures page lists them. The site also has to fit the course population: pediatric patients for NRSG 638C, women's health for NRSG 637C. When those limits meet a short timeline, the nearest workable site can be a long drive away.

Plan for that possibility. Extra travel lengthens every clinical day, and the site's onboarding and any site fees apply wherever it is.

Thirty attempts against an 8-week calendar

Thirty contacts, each with a wait for a reply, take real time, and Olivet's clinical courses run in 8-week blocks. Olivet does not publish how long the coordinator's search takes once you ask, or how far ahead of a course you should reach the threshold. Everything that follows a found site still applies: Olivet's approval, finished compliance, a drug screen timed to clear two to four weeks ahead of the practicum, and the site's onboarding.

The practical answer is to start counting early, contact several practices at once rather than one at a time, and update the coordinator on your progress well before your start date. If your course is already close, the need a preceptor fast page lays out a compressed plan.

Questions Olivet students ask

Can I ask the SON Clinical Coordinator for help before 30 attempts?

The FNP page ties the coordinator's search to 30 unsuccessful attempts, but nothing on it stops you from writing to the coordinator earlier about how to count and record attempts. That early message is worth sending. PG-APRN and MSN NEL students have no stated threshold at all, so they can ask how and when to request help from the start.

Can I turn down a site the coordinator finds?

Olivet's pages do not say what happens if you decline a coordinator placement, only that it may be outside your preferred location. Before the coordinator starts, tell them how far you can realistically travel. If an offer still does not work, ask directly whether declining affects further help, and weigh the time lost against the distance.

Do Olivet NEL students have to make 30 attempts?

The count appears only on the FNP page. The MSN Nursing Education & Leadership page offers NEL students substantial assistance from the Clinical Coordinator on NRSG 604 and NRSG 620 searches, with no number attached, and the Post-Bachelor's NEL page has no statement on support. NEL students should confirm the process for their track in writing.

If my preceptor quits mid-course, does the count restart?

Olivet does not address this. A mid-course loss is a different problem from an initial search, because the course clock is already running. Tell your course faculty and the SON Clinical Coordinator at once, and ask whether earlier attempts still count. The preceptor dropped out page covers the steps to take that week.

Is there a charge for the coordinator's help?

Olivet's School of Nursing fee sheet does not list a placement-service line. It does list site-dependent costs that apply wherever your site is, such as a MyClinicalExchange platform charge for sites that use it and possible site fees for parking, an ID badge or individual malpractice insurance.
