The 13 states where Olivet FNP practicum hours are not permitted
Olivet Nazarene University's FNP disclosure, dated March 12, 2026, places 13 states in a Not Approved group: Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming. Olivet has not yet determined whether its FNP meets requirements there, and practicum hours may not be done in them, whichever state you call home.

The 13 states on Olivet's Not Approved list
Olivet's FNP file, linked from the university's licensure disclosures page, sorts every state and the District of Columbia into two groups. These 13 states form the Not Approved group. The table sets each one beside its rating in Olivet's separate 2024 BSN file, a reminder that the FNP status speaks for one program only. What Olivet's wording says, and what it leaves out
Olivet explains the Not Approved group in a single line: it has not yet determined whether its FNP meets the requirements of these states. That is a statement about Olivet's own review. It is not a finding that a state turned Olivet down, and it says nothing about the nurse practitioners or practices in those states.
The file gives no reason for any individual state, so none should be read into the grouping, which runs from New England to the Pacific coast. The words not yet leave room for change, but only a newer file on Olivet's disclosures page moves a state, and Olivet publishes no timeline for one.

A willing preceptor in a Not Approved state still cannot host Olivet FNP hours. Confirm the practice's state before you ask anyone to precept you.
Your home state does not open these 13 states
The rule follows the practice, not your address. Olivet's file tells students who live in an approved state that they are "not permitted to complete your practicum hours" in a state on the Not Approved list. Living in Illinois, Ohio or Texas changes nothing about where hours may be logged.
In practice this catches three kinds of plans. A student in Illinois who hopes to complete NRSG 637C at a relative's women's health practice in Georgia or Tennessee. A student in New Jersey or Connecticut whose job or commute runs into New York. A student who spends winters in Arizona or California and wants to log hours there. Each plan needs a site in an approved state instead, and the earlier that is settled, the more time you have to find it.
If you live in one of the 13 states
Olivet's FNP is online, so you can study from a Not Approved state, but every clinical hour has to happen at a site in an approved one. With 750 hours across the program, that tends to mean a practice within driving distance across a state line, or blocks of time spent near family in an approved state. Before you plan around a neighbor, check how your RN license applies where the site is (the RN license page covers Olivet's license rule), and whether the drive fits the load. In the new curriculum, NRSG 636C and NRSG 639C each carry 240 hours.
Licensure after graduation in these states
At heart the file is a licensure notice. Placing a state in the Not Approved group means Olivet has not determined whether its FNP meets that state's requirements, and those include the requirements for the APRN license you would seek there after graduation.
If you plan to practice as an FNP in one of these states, raise it with Olivet before you enroll or as early as you can: write to FNPpracticum@olivet.edu and read your state board's rules for graduates of programs based in another state. National certification through ANCC or AANPCB, which Olivet's FNP prepares you to sit, is one piece of licensure. The state board decides the rest, and its answer is the one to have in hand before you commit to the program.
Applicants, track changes, NEL and RN-BSN students
- Applicants. Olivet's file limits where FNP practicum hours happen, not who may apply, and Olivet's pages name no state that is closed to admission. Its accreditation sheet lists online programs as available in every one of the 50 states. Apply knowing your hours will be in an approved state.
- Switching into the FNP or returning to it. Olivet applies the same state rule to students who change into the FNP track or come back to it after time away, so recheck the list before your first FNP clinical.
- Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate. The certificate page requires an approved state, and the file names only the FNP track. Confirm with FNPpracticum@olivet.edu that the same 13 states apply to you.
- MSN Nursing Education & Leadership and the NEL certificate. The NEL pages require practicum hours in an approved state but publish no NEL list, and the FNP file does not mention NEL. If you live in one of the 13 states, ask the Online Advising Team in writing which list governs
NRSG 604andNRSG 620before you approach a preceptor. - RN-BSN. Olivet opens the RN-BSN to students beyond Illinois, with practicum hours done where they live, and the FNP disclosure does not address it. Send questions about your state to the Online Advising Team.

Why is my state on Olivet's Not Approved list?
Olivet's file does not say. It states only that Olivet has not yet determined whether its FNP meets the requirements of each state in that group, with no reason given for any single state. For an answer about your own state, write to FNPpracticum@olivet.edu and keep the reply with your program records.
Could my state move to the Approved list?
The phrase not yet leaves that possibility open, but Olivet publishes no timeline, and only a newer file on its licensure disclosures page changes a state's status. Open the linked FNP file before each clinical course rather than relying on an older download or on what classmates remember.
If I live in Pennsylvania, can I do my FNP hours in Ohio?
Ohio is on Olivet's Approved list, so a practice there can host Olivet FNP hours once Olivet approves the preceptor and your compliance is complete. Check how your RN license applies in Ohio, and plan the drive around the hour load of each clinical course before you commit.
Do I have to move out of a Not Approved state to finish Olivet's FNP?
Olivet's published rules do not require a move. You can live in any of the 13 states while taking coursework online; what matters is that each practicum hour happens at a site in an approved state. If your permanent address does change, tell the Online Advising Team, as the disclosures page asks.
What if my preceptor sees patients in two states?
Olivet's rule is about the state where your hours are completed, so plan to work only at the office in an approved state. Name that office's address when the preceptor goes to Olivet for approval, and keep your clinical days there for the whole course.
