What Olivet's disclosures say about Illinois
For a student living in Illinois, the FNP answer is short: Olivet's March 2026 file lists Illinois as approved, so FNP practicum hours can be done here once Olivet approves your preceptor. The file names only the FNP track, so Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate students should have the SON Clinical Coordinator confirm the list covers them too.
Illinois is also where Olivet's authority to operate comes from. The Illinois Board of Higher Education authorizes Olivet in the state, and Olivet takes part in state authorization reciprocity (SARA) through that board. Bourbonnais, Wisner Hall and where each program trains
Olivet's main campus is at One University Avenue in Bourbonnais, in Kankakee County, about 50 miles south of Chicago's Loop. The School of Nursing is based in Wisner Hall for Nursing Education, home to the Virtual Learning Center and its simulation manikins. The Traditional BSN is the one nursing program taught on campus.
Campus BSN students never run a preceptor search. The school assigns every clinical group and site, placements can sit up to about 90 minutes from Bourbonnais, and students are not allowed to reach out to sites or would-be preceptors themselves. The levels and capstone rules are on Traditional BSN clinicals.
Everyone else studies online and trains near home: MSN FNP and post-graduate FNP certificate students, both NEL options and the RN-BSN. FNP students may still come to an Olivet testing location for in-person midterm and final exams, subject to availability.
Collaborative agreements and full practice authority
AANP counts Illinois among its reduced practice states. An Illinois APRN needs a written collaborative agreement with a physician unless an exception applies, and the two official sources list the exceptions differently. IDFPR's qualification sheet exempts APRNs working in a hospital, an FQHC or an ambulatory surgical treatment center. The rule text, 68 IAC 1300.410, exempts hospital and hospital-affiliate settings plus ambulatory surgical treatment centers, adds APRNs holding full practice authority, and does not mention FQHCs.
The agreement sets out how the NP and physician work together and which categories of care the NP provides. The physician need not be on site; consultation can happen in person or by telecommunication. For prescribing, the physician delegates authority in writing and files notice with IDFPR, and the APRN then holds a mid-level controlled substances license.
Full practice authority ends the need for an agreement. It requires Illinois RN and APRN licenses, 4,000 or more hours of clinical work as a licensed APRN in the certified specialty, and 250 hours of specialty continuing education. FPA licenses rose to 4,756 by December 2025, from 3,144 in June 2024. A preceptor you meet may practice either way; Olivet's criteria in the Canvas requirements course decide who fits. Illinois preceptor rules stop at pre-licensure programs
The Illinois nursing code does define preceptors, but only for pre-licensure RN programs. Under 68 IAC 1300.340, such a preceptor is approved and oriented by program faculty, works under a nurse faculty member, stays present any time the student is giving care, and must be licensed as an RN in whichever state the student is practicing in. Out-of-state pre-licensure programs that want Illinois clinical sites file proof of approval, syllabi, facility contracts and preceptor forms, renewed every two years. That filing concerns other schools' students arriving in Illinois, not Olivet's.
For graduate and APRN programs the code says nothing about who secures the preceptor. Olivet's own rule therefore governs: you look for a preceptor through personal and professional networks first, and FNP students get the SON Clinical Coordinator's help after 30 unsuccessful attempts.
Money is not part of the Illinois picture. The Illinois Nursing Workforce Center's aid page lists the ISAC Nursing Education Scholarship and an IBHE nursing-school grant, with no preceptor tax credit beside them.
How Riverside, Northwestern, OSF and Carle take NP students
Four Illinois systems publish how they handle nurse practitioner students. None of these pages mentions Olivet, and each system chooses the schools it works with.
- Riverside Healthcare, Kankakee. Riverside restricts NP rotations to students from programs that have an affiliation agreement in place with it. Its Graduate Medical Education department places students through an online NP Student Application, in order of application, and individual offices do not take students outside that process. The usual preceptor is a CNP or CCNS with 2 years in practice, a new agreement needs at least 90 days, and Riverside Medical Group's women's health rotations are closed indefinitely.
- Northwestern Medicine, north and northwest suburbs. Sites include Huntley, Lake Forest and Grayslake, McHenry, Woodstock and ambulatory clinics. APRN requests are reviewed monthly, placement is limited to students whose schools hold a current affiliation agreement with Northwestern, answers take 4 to 8 weeks, and Northwestern tells students to line up a backup site. Its separate west-suburbs form serves RN-BSN, MSN and DNP practicum students, not APRN students chasing patient-care hours.
- OSF HealthCare. APRN, PA and DNP clinical-track students write to OSF's advanced practice student inbox. MSN leadership and education requests go to a separate student-experience inbox, the one NEL students would use.
- Carle Health. NP, PA, CNM and medical students apply through an online Clinical Rotation Application covering Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria. Carle says an application does not assure a rotation, and its page lists practicums among arrangements needing an affiliation agreement.

Before you apply to Riverside, Northwestern or Carle, find out from the SON Clinical Coordinator whether Olivet has the affiliation agreement that system requires.
Kankakee County shortage areas and the Illinois NP workforce
HRSA designates Kankakee County as a low-income primary care Health Professional Shortage Area, score 10, first designated in 2018 and last updated in September 2025. The county also falls in the LI-Joliet Service Area low-income mental health HPSA with Grundy and Will counties, designated in February 2026. The older Madden geographic mental health HPSA for the same three counties is proposed for withdrawal.
Two federally qualified health centers hold facility HPSA scores for Kankakee sites: Kankakee Community Health Center at 19 and Community Health Partnership of Illinois at 21, including its mobile medical and dental van. Each decides for itself whether it hosts NP students; the scores show where primary care need runs high near Bourbonnais. Kankakee and Chicagoland preceptors maps the region.
Statewide, the Illinois Nursing Workforce Center counted 17,087 active certified nurse practitioners among 21,082 APRNs on October 9, 2025, up from 13,529 CNPs in November 2021. By December 1, 2025 Illinois had 21,294 APRN licenses, 16,462 of them at Illinois addresses. The center's 2024 survey found 18% of active APRN licensees were 55 or older.
Your RN license here, and APRN licensure after Olivet
Illinois remains a non-compact state with no NLC legislation pending, so a multistate license from elsewhere gives no practice privilege at an Illinois site. It is not among the five states that have enacted the APRN Compact either. Olivet's unencumbered-license rule is on the RN license page.
Illinois's Nurse Practice Act, at 225 ILCS 65/50-15(b)(10), also carves out an exemption: a nurse holding an RN license from another U.S. jurisdiction may practice as part of a program of study while enrolled in an Illinois graduate or baccalaureate completion program, with clinical supervision set by the school and the health care organization. Confirm with the SON Clinical Coordinator whether it fits your situation. After graduation, IDFPR licenses an Illinois NP in this order:

- Sign a collaborative agreementNeeded before practicing outside the exempt settings; the collaborating physician files notice of the agreement and of delegated prescriptive authority.
- Add the controlled substances license (309)Required to prescribe controlled substances. Schedule II delegation needs proof of 45 graduate contact hours in pharmacology.

Questions Olivet students ask
Does Riverside Healthcare take Olivet nurse practitioner students?
Riverside's page ties NP rotations to an affiliation agreement between Riverside and the student's school, and it does not name Olivet one way or the other. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator whether that agreement exists. If it does, you apply through Riverside's GME process; if a new one is needed, Riverside asks for at least 90 days.
Can an Illinois NP with full practice authority precept me?
The Illinois code's preceptor rules cover pre-licensure programs, so they do not settle it. For an Olivet student, the answer comes from Olivet: the criteria in your track's Canvas requirements course and Olivet's approval of each preceptor. Bring the NP's license type and practice setting to that review, whether they hold FPA or work under a collaborative agreement.
Northwest Indiana is home. Can my Olivet clinicals be at a Chicago site?
Illinois and Indiana are both approved for Olivet FNP hours, so either side works on Olivet's list. The catch is licensing: an Indiana multistate license carries no privilege into Illinois, which sits outside the compact, so a Chicago site means holding an Illinois RN license. What do Illinois preceptors get for teaching an NP student?
Continuing education credit. Under 68 IAC 1300.130, an APRN earns 10 CE hours toward renewal for each APRN student precepted over an academic semester or quarter, capped at 30 hours per renewal cycle, and the student's school supplies the documentation. It is a concrete benefit to mention when you ask.
How long after graduation until I can practice without a collaborative agreement in Illinois?
Full practice authority needs 4,000 hours of clinical experience as a licensed APRN in your certified specialty, counted after first national certification and verified by collaborating physicians or hospital medical staff, plus 250 CE hours in that specialty. Until then you practice under a written collaborative agreement unless you work in an exempt setting.
