Olivet's Indiana disclosure results
The March 2026 FNP file puts Indiana with the approved states, and the 2024 BSN review marks it met. An Indiana resident can complete FNP hours with an Indiana preceptor, and a student relocating to Indiana from one of the 13 Not Approved states gains an approved home base. Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, NEL and RN-BSN students do not see their track named, so they check with the SON Clinical Coordinator. Olivet's licensure disclosures explains the terms.

What Indiana's board regulates, and what it leaves alone
Indiana's nursing board sits inside the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, and its education page draws a clear line. The board accredits Indiana's entry-level schools, the ones that bring students to their first nursing license as an RN or LPN. Degree-completion and graduate programs are, in the board's words, not programs it reviews or accredits, and its rule defining eligible programs, 848 IAC 1-2-4, likewise addresses pre-licensure schools only. Nothing in the board's rules asks a graduate or completion program based in another state to file before its students start clinicals in Indiana.
That puts the gatekeeping in two places: Olivet's approval of your preceptor and the clinical site's own onboarding. On AANP's map Indiana is a reduced practice state: at least one element of every Indiana NP's practice runs through a physician collaboration that the state regulates. Your preceptor will be working inside that arrangement, and Olivet's criteria for who may precept sit in your track's Canvas requirements course.
Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and the two border metros
Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood is by far the largest Indiana metro, home to roughly 2.2 million people, while Fort Wayne counts about 466,000. Two other metros straddle a border: the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro includes 728,743 Indiana residents, and the Louisville/Jefferson County metro another 281,424. Among the large systems are Indiana University Health, Parkview Health and Ascension St. Vincent, with Franciscan Health and Community Health Network also prominent; each posts its own student terms.
Those border metros widen your map. Olivet approves Illinois and Kentucky for FNP hours as well, so a preceptor just across either line still fits Olivet's list. What changes at the line is the license you train on, covered next.
Your license for clinicals in Indiana
Indiana has honored multistate nurse licenses since July 1, 2020, when it put the Nurse Licensure Compact into effect. If your home state issues you a multistate license under the compact, you can practice in Indiana on it, and an Indiana resident's multistate license reaches Kentucky and other compact states. Illinois is the gap for northwest Indiana: it sits outside the compact, so an Indiana license stops at the Illinois line.
Indiana has not enacted the APRN Compact, which has five enacting states and needs seven to operate. Olivet's rule is an RN license that is current, unencumbered and valid in the state hosting your clinicals; the RN license page covers reporting duties and what happens if a license is encumbered.

Questions Olivet students ask
Does Indiana's board need to approve Olivet before I train there?
Indiana's board limits its accreditation to programs that prepare nurses for a first license, and graduate and RN-BSN programs sit outside its review. That leaves no Indiana board filing for an Olivet graduate student's clinicals. Plan instead for Olivet's preceptor approval and whatever contract or onboarding the Indiana site sets.
Can I use my Indiana compact license at a Chicago hospital?
Not on its own. Illinois is a non-member of the compact, so the privilege an Indiana multistate license gives you ends at the border, and a Chicago site will need an Illinois RN license. Is Louisville an option for my Olivet clinicals?
Kentucky is approved for Olivet FNP hours and belongs to the compact, so a southern Indiana student holding an Indiana multistate license can train at a Louisville site. Olivet still approves the preceptor, and the Kentucky site runs its own onboarding. Details are in the Kentucky guide.
I live in Indiana. Can I take Olivet's RN-BSN?
Yes. According to Olivet, the RN-BSN is open to students living outside Illinois, who do their practicum hours in the community where they live. The RN-BSN does not appear on the licensure disclosures page, and Indiana's board does not review RN-BSN programs. The practicum courses are described on the RN-BSN page.
