Olivet Nazarene University counts Kentucky among its approved states for FNP practicum hours, and Kentucky's nursing board asks nothing of programs based in other states by way of approval, even when their students train in Kentucky. Kentucky in Olivet's FNP and BSN files
The March 2026 FNP disclosure lists Kentucky as approved, and Olivet's 2024 BSN file lists it as met. For a Kentucky resident, that means FNP hours in Kentucky with a preceptor Olivet approves. The FNP file leaves the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate unnamed, and the NEL and RN-BSN tracks are absent from the disclosures page, so students in those tracks confirm with the SON Clinical Coordinator.

What the Kentucky Board of Nursing expects
By KBN's own description, an outside program owes it no approval, even one whose only Kentucky footprint is a clinical rotation. KBN's approval covers only prelicensure programs that begin in Kentucky. The RN-BSN is outside its reach entirely, and graduate programs come under it only when they lead to licensure.
The license expectations are firmer. When an online MSN or DNP program prepares APRNs, anyone supervising its students at a Kentucky clinical site, or precepting them there, needs active Kentucky RN and APRN licenses in good standing, though faculty living in a compact state can get by with the Kentucky APRN license alone. In RN-BSN programs, a clinical instructor or preceptor working with students in Kentucky must carry a Kentucky RN license if their home is outside the compact.
KBN further cites KRS 314.101: a nurse from another state on a Kentucky clinical rotation is exempt when the school is a SARA institution or carries Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education licensure. NC-SARA lists Olivet as a participant through Illinois; confirm with the SON Clinical Coordinator before you lean on the exemption.
Kentucky NP practice and where students look
AANP rates Kentucky reduced practice. Prescribing is where the limits sit: unless the board exempts them, qualifying NPs need two separate physician agreements, which together cover controlled and non-controlled prescribing, and a newly licensed NP's first year comes with conditions on the employment setting. The largest metros are Louisville/Jefferson County, with about 1.12 million people on the Kentucky side, Lexington-Fayette, the Kentucky share of the Cincinnati metro, and Bowling Green. Baptist Health and St. Elizabeth Healthcare are among the major systems, alongside UofL Health, Norton Healthcare and UK HealthCare, each with its own student terms.
Border lines and your license
Louisville's metro reaches into southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky's into Ohio, and Olivet approves both of those states for FNP hours. Tennessee is different. It is one of Olivet's 13 Not Approved states, so a preceptor across the southern border cannot host your FNP hours even though you live in approved Kentucky; see the not-approved states.
Kentucky joined the compact's multistate licensing in January 2018. That license lets you train in Indiana, Missouri or another compact state, but it stops at the Illinois border because Illinois is not a member. Kentucky has passed no APRN Compact legislation. Questions Olivet students ask
Could a Tennessee clinic host my Olivet FNP hours while I live in Kentucky?
It cannot. Tennessee sits on Olivet's Not Approved list, and Olivet does not permit FNP practicum hours there even for students who live in an approved state. Keep your preceptor in Kentucky or in another approved neighbor such as Indiana, Ohio or Missouri, and ask the SON Clinical Coordinator if a site sits close to the line.
Which Kentucky licenses should my preceptor hold?
For an online APRN program like Olivet's FNP, KBN's overview asks anyone precepting in Kentucky to hold active, unencumbered Kentucky RN and APRN licenses; the compact exception it describes is written for faculty. An NP already practicing in Kentucky holds the Kentucky APRN license, so the RN side is the piece to check if they live in another state.
Can I take Olivet's RN-BSN from Kentucky?
Yes. Olivet's RN-BSN page says students living beyond Illinois can enroll and do their practicum hours locally. KBN treats RN-BSN programs as outside its jurisdiction, though it expects preceptors living outside the compact to hold a Kentucky RN license. The courses are on the RN-BSN page.
