Olivet nursing clinicals in Missouri
Olivet Nazarene University's FNP students may log practicum hours in Missouri, which sits on the approved list. Among Illinois's neighbors it is also the most restrictive practice state: a Missouri NP never outgrows the requirement to practice in a collaborative arrangement with a physician, and both of its big metros spill into other states.

Missouri in Olivet's licensure disclosures
Olivet's FNP file dated March 12, 2026 places Missouri among the approved states; in the 2024 BSN review it is met. A student living in Missouri can therefore complete FNP hours there once Olivet approves the preceptor. Students in the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, the NEL options or the RN-BSN find no line for their own track, so they take the question to the SON Clinical Coordinator. Restricted practice and Missouri's board
AANP rates Missouri restricted practice. The collaborative practice arrangement with a physician lasts for an NP's entire career in Missouri, and it comes with ratio caps, chart review and controlled substance limits. Any Missouri NP who agrees to precept you works inside that arrangement, so ask early whether the practice needs anyone else's sign-off before it takes a student.
The board's education rules, 20 CSR 2200-2, are written for schools the board itself approves. Its student exemption, RSMo 335.081(6)(a), applies to students of approved schools of professional nursing without saying how a program from another state is treated. Olivet requires an RN license of every graduate student, so you train on that license, and the SON Clinical Coordinator can confirm whether Missouri expects anything from Olivet before your first day.
A preceptor tax credit written for physicians
Since January 1, 2023, Missouri has offered a state income tax credit to community-based faculty preceptors under RSMo 135.690. The people who can claim it are Missouri-licensed physicians and PAs, and only when they teach a Missouri medical or physician assistant student in an unpaid core primary care rotation of 120 hours or more. Credits are capped each year and awarded in order of claim.
Nurse practitioners and nursing students are left out. An NP preceptor cannot claim it, and a physician who hosts an Olivet FNP student earns nothing under it either. When you ask a Missouri clinician, lead with the teaching and the fit with your Olivet course rather than a tax benefit.
St. Louis, Kansas City and the state lines
Missouri's population centers are the St. Louis metro, with about 2.14 million people on the Missouri side, Kansas City with about 1.33 million, then Springfield and Columbia. Mercy, BJC HealthCare, CoxHealth, SSM Health and MU Health Care rank among the largest systems, and each publishes its own terms for student rotations.
Both big metros cross a line. About 672,000 people in the St. Louis metro live in Illinois, which Olivet approves for FNP hours but which sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Kansas City metro reaches into Kansas, which Olivet approves with additional Kansas requirements; Olivet routes Kansas questions to the FNPpracticum@olivet.edu mailbox.
Licensing for Missouri clinicals
The compact entered Missouri statute at RSMo 335.360 (effective July 20, 2017), and multistate licensing began there on January 19, 2018. A nurse with another compact state's multistate license can practice in Missouri, and Missouri's multistate license works in the other member states. Questions Olivet students ask
My preceptor is in Kansas City, Kansas. Does that work for Olivet?
Kansas is approved for Olivet FNP hours, but with additional Kansas requirements, and Olivet asks Kansas students to write to FNPpracticum@olivet.edu. If your preceptor practices in Kansas, contact that mailbox before you commit. Olivet's file carries no such note for the Missouri side of the metro.
I live in the Metro East. Should I train in Illinois or Missouri?
Both are approved for Olivet FNP hours, so the deciding factor is your license. Illinois is outside the compact and Missouri is in it, so an Illinois license covers only the Illinois side, while a Missouri multistate license stops at the river. Is a Missouri NP's collaborative arrangement a barrier to precepting?
It is the normal condition in Missouri, where every NP practices under one. Olivet's approval, guided by the preceptor criteria in your Canvas requirements course, decides whether a given NP fits your course. Share the preceptor's license and practice setting when you submit them so the review has what it needs.
Does Missouri's board approve out-of-state graduate nursing programs?
Its program rules speak to the programs it approves, and its student exemption covers students in approved schools without addressing programs based elsewhere. Olivet is based in Illinois, so ask the SON Clinical Coordinator whether Missouri expects anything from Olivet before a clinical course begins there.
