What Olivet's disclosures show for Iowa
Iowa appears on the approved side of Olivet's March 2026 FNP file and as met in the 2024 BSN review. For an Iowa resident in the MSN FNP, that means clinical hours at home once Olivet approves the preceptor. The file is silent about the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, while the NEL tracks and RN-BSN sit outside the disclosures page, so those students get a track-specific answer from the SON Clinical Coordinator. Iowa's duties for programs based elsewhere
Iowa's nursing board works under the state's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). By its own account it approves no nursing programs from outside Iowa, but its criteria page sets expectations for any such program whose students train in Iowa:
- Obtain the Bureau of Iowa College Aid's approval to operate in the state.
- Observe Iowa law on top of the home state's own rules.
- Hand the board data whenever it requests it.
- See that faculty and preceptors working in Iowa are actively licensed there, by Iowa itself or through a multistate license.
- Put clinical contracts in writing that divide responsibilities, keep student learning under faculty control, and allow for annual review and for ending the arrangement.
The program-level items are Olivet's to answer, and the SON Clinical Coordinator can confirm them. The preceptor license item is one you can check yourself before you ask. Iowa also gives both the school and the clinical facility a say in approving preceptors, which matches Olivet's practice of approving each preceptor you propose.
Full practice ARNPs and Iowa's preceptorship rule
AANP rates Iowa full practice, so NPs there, licensed as ARNPs, practice without a required physician agreement. For students in ARNP programs, rule 481 IAC 616.16 asks that the bulk of the preceptorship be spent with clinicians matching the student's role and population focus, whether ARNPs or physicians. For an Olivet FNP student, that points toward family-focus clinicians. The rule also expects each preceptor to be licensed in their own practice state, and it calls for written preceptorship agreements with a yearly review.
Iowa gives preceptors something back, too. A nurse who precepts a student through a formal preceptorship lasting at least 60 hours earns 6 contact hours at license renewal, with the school supplying the paperwork. Mention it when you make the ask.
Des Moines, Iowa City and the Quad Cities
Iowa's biggest metro is Des Moines-West Des Moines, around 759,000 people, and Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are among the others. University of Iowa Health Care, MercyOne and UnityPoint Health rank among the major systems, and each lists its student terms on its own site.
The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro spans the Mississippi, with about 175,000 of its people on the Iowa side. Olivet approves both states for FNP hours, but the license picture differs by riverbank. Iowa has been a compact licensure state since January 2018, while Illinois is outside it, so a Moline or Rock Island site needs an Illinois RN license. The APRN Compact has no force in Iowa. Olivet's RN license rule applies on either bank.

I'm an RN-BSN student in Iowa. Whose license do I train on?
Your own. Iowa Code 152.1 exempts only unlicensed nursing students, and post-licensure students need an active license valid in Iowa, whether Iowa-issued or multistate, and must follow Iowa Code while there.
