NRSG 604 Population Health: the first NEL practicum
NRSG 604 Population Health is where Olivet Nazarene University's MSN Nursing Education & Leadership students log their first practicum hours: 30 direct clinical hours with an approved preceptor they choose themselves. It is only the fourth course in the new-curriculum sample order, so the preceptor search and your compliance file have to come together within your first months in the program.

Where NRSG 604 falls in the NEL sequence
Olivet's NEL page promises two practicums, one short and population-focused (30 hours, which it calls an Advanced Clinical Practicum) and one long, set in academia and leadership (120 hours). In the new curriculum those are NRSG 604 and NRSG 620, and they sit at opposite ends of the program. NRSG 604 arrives right after three foundation courses; NRSG 620 is the last course you take.
That early position is the thing to plan for. You reach the practicum before any of the education and leadership role courses, so the Canvas requirements course, your compliance items and a preceptor all have to be ready while you are still settling into online study.

Other versions of the course: NRSG 658 and the FNP schedule
Continuing students on the current curriculum have a different pair. Their education track pairs the 30-hour NRSG 658, an advanced clinical practice course for the academic nurse educator, with the 120-hour NRSG 634. Those students also self-enroll in the Canvas practicum requirements course before the role course, NRSG 629, instead of waiting for an automatic invitation. FNP students meet NRSG 604 too: it is the fourth course in the FNP sample order. The handbook is not consistent here, though. Its NEL schedule attaches 30 direct clinical hours to NRSG 604, yet the FNP schedule shows no hours at all beside it. If you are in the FNP track, ask your advisor or course faculty whether your section carries practicum hours before you assume either way.
Getting ready before the course opens
- Join the requirements courseOn the new curriculum, Olivet places you in the NEL version of the Student Clinical or Practicum Requirements Course for you; watch your Olivet inbox for the invitation, which also surfaces on your Canvas dashboard. That course sets the practicum rules; the requirements course page explains both enrollment routes.
- Choose a preceptor in an approved stateOlivet's NEL pages insist on an approved state but print no list for this track. Settle the question for your state with the SON Clinical Coordinator first, then approach sites.
- Send the preceptor for Olivet's approvalOlivet approves every preceptor its students use. The steps and the form live in the requirements course; preceptor approval covers what to prepare.
- Finish compliance and time the drug screenNothing on the compliance list can be outstanding on day one. Olivet wants the drug screen cleared inside a set window, two to four weeks out from the practicum's first day; if
NRSG 603runs the usual eight weeks, that window opens before it ends. - Complete site onboardingSome sites run their own onboarding, sometimes through MyClinicalExchange, and may add badge or parking charges. Start it as soon as the site says yes.
Finding a population health preceptor
Olivet's first ask of NEL students is a search of their own contacts, personal and professional. Beyond that, the NEL page promises the SON Clinical Coordinator's substantial assistance and sets no attempt count before it starts. The 30-attempt threshold people mention comes from the FNP page and does not appear for the NEL.
Olivet's public handbook does not spell out NEL preceptor qualifications, so read the requirements course before you ask anyone. Then look at where population-level work happens near you: a county or city health department, a community health program, school health services, or a care coordination team that tracks outcomes for a whole patient group. Asking a nurse whose job is already population-focused makes the request easy to say yes to, because your 30 hours fit into work they do anyway.
Keep the ask specific. Tell a prospective preceptor it is 30 hours, name the course dates, and explain that faculty evaluate your work while the preceptor may be asked for input.
Passing NRSG 604
Olivet's handbook lists a B- or better to pass NRSG 604, the same bar it sets for NRSG 620. It shares the 83% rule for graded work that covers all of Olivet's clinical and practicum courses, and every one of the 30 hours must be documented to faculty's satisfaction. A retake would use one of the two NRSG course repeats Olivet allows across the whole MSN, so these 30 hours deserve the same care as the larger practicum. NEL students use Project Concert for competency tracking, which the fee sheet lists for the NEL track. Practicum work closes at the same Central-time cutoff as the rest of the course on its final day (see eight-week courses), and 30 hours spread across the weeks is far easier to finish than 30 squeezed into the final two.

How many hours is Olivet's NRSG 604?
In the new-curriculum NEL schedule the course carries 30 direct clinical hours, and the NEL program page describes a 30-hour population health practicum. Together with the 120 hours in NRSG 620, that makes 150 practicum hours across the NEL program.
Do FNP students log practicum hours in NRSG 604?
The FNP sample order includes NRSG 604 as its fourth course, but the FNP schedule lists no hours for it, while the NEL schedule lists 30. The handbook does not explain the difference. FNP students should ask their advisor or course faculty whether their section carries practicum hours.
Does the Post-Bachelor's NEL certificate include NRSG 604?
Olivet's sources disagree. Its web page mentions both practicums, the short population health one and the long one. In the handbook, though, the certificate's course order ends in NRSG 620 and never lists NRSG 604. Confirm your plan with your advisor, and see the Post-Bachelor's NEL certificate page for the rest of that program.
Can I use the same preceptor for NRSG 604 and NRSG 620?
Olivet's public handbook does not address it. The two courses have different focuses, population health in one and academia and leadership in the other, so the same person fits both only if their role covers both. Raise it with the SON Clinical Coordinator early.
What if I cannot finish the 30 hours on time?
The X grade with eight extra weeks is written for NRSG 620, not NRSG 604. For NRSG 604, talk to your course faculty before the last week. An Incomplete exists for narrow cases and has an early request deadline; leave and delays sets out the conditions.
