Studying with Olivet from Alabama
Alabama is off limits for Olivet Nazarene University FNP practicum hours: Olivet's FNP disclosure dated March 12, 2026 lists the state as Not Approved, so an Alabama resident in the FNP track completes every clinical hour in an approved state, most often Florida. NEL and RN-BSN students confirm with the SON Clinical Coordinator which state list governs their practicums.

Alabama's entries in Olivet's disclosures
Not Approved, in Olivet's words, means Olivet's own review is unfinished: it has yet to decide whether its FNP satisfies Alabama's requirements, and the file gives no Alabama-specific reason. It binds students from approved states too: an Illinois student cannot bank hours in Huntsville. The not approved states page covers all 13.

Alabama FNP students: Florida is the approved neighbor
Of the four states touching Alabama, only Florida appears on Olivet's approved list. Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee share Alabama's Not Approved status, which leaves approved states farther away for students who can spend a block of weeks near family. Students around Mobile live closest to the Florida line.
Alabama has honored the multistate compact since the first day of 2020, and Florida belongs to it as well, so an Alabama-issued multistate license lets you work at a Florida clinic without a second application. Olivet's own expectation, a current RN license with no encumbrance that is good in the clinical state, is laid out in our RN license guide.
The Alabama Board of Nursing's rule for programs based elsewhere
The board's rule, 610-X-3-.09, reaches programs from other states that prepare new nurses or advanced practice nurses. Fifteen days or more ahead of the first Alabama clinical day, such a program files its intent with the board, naming the student, the supervisor, each one's license number and the host facility, plus a statement from that facility's nursing director or CNO. A yearly charge for out-of-state programs comes with it, and the board is plain that no student starts Alabama clinicals until approval and payment are both in place.
Post-licensure students, RN-BSN and MSN learners among them, face a license test instead: the board's FAQ requires an Alabama RN license in good standing, or a multistate one from another compact member, for any clinical work in Alabama. This is Alabama's framework, and Olivet's file draws no connection between it and Olivet's listing.
Reduced practice and where Alabama NPs work
On AANP's scale, Alabama lands in the reduced practice tier. Every Alabama NP works under a state-regulated physician collaboration covering some part of practice, and two boards, nursing and medical examiners, share oversight of NP practice.
Birmingham leads the state's metros at close to 1.2 million residents, trailed by Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery, and UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital and Mobile's Infirmary Health are among the large systems. Alabama also gives some preceptors a state income tax credit, but only for rotations serving programs physically based inside Alabama, which leaves preceptors of Olivet students outside it.

Can I live in Alabama while in Olivet's online FNP?
Nothing Olivet publishes shuts Alabama residents out of admission, and its accreditation sheet counts all 50 states among the places its online programs reach. The FNP disclosure controls where clinical hours happen, so studying from Alabama works as long as every practicum hour is at an approved-state site with a preceptor Olivet has approved.
Will my Alabama nursing license cover a Florida clinical site?
If your Alabama license is multistate, it should, since both states sit inside the compact. A single-state Alabama license stops at the state line, so check which type you hold before committing to a Florida preceptor. Whatever the type, Olivet expects the license to be clear of any encumbrance and good in Florida.
Does Alabama's preceptor tax credit apply to someone precepting me?
The Alabama Preceptor Tax Incentive Program rewards a rotation only when the student's program is an Alabama institution with a physical home in the state. Olivet is based in Bourbonnais, Illinois, so an Alabama clinician precepting you would not earn it. For FNP students the point is moot anyway, because Olivet does not permit FNP hours in Alabama.
