California students and Olivet's online nursing programs
No Olivet Nazarene University FNP practicum hours may be completed in California, a state Olivet's FNP disclosure of March 12, 2026 lists as Not Approved. A Californian in Olivet's FNP completes all clinicals in an approved state, and Nevada is the lone approved neighbor. NEL and RN-BSN students take a different set of questions to the SON Clinical Coordinator.

California's status, file by file
The FNP result reflects a determination Olivet says it has not yet made for California; the file attaches no California-specific cause. Someone applying from Los Angeles or Sacramento can take the coursework online at home, but the clinical plan points out of state from day one. A second license is part of any California FNP plan
California has stayed out of the multistate compact, with no compact bill on the horizon according to the NCSBN map, and Nevada, the only approved state on its border, has stayed out too. A California FNP student heading to a Nevada practice therefore applies for a Nevada RN license alongside the California one, because Olivet wants a current, unencumbered license that is valid wherever the clinical takes place (license details).
Arizona and Oregon, California's other neighbors, share the Not Approved label. With 750 FNP clinical hours to place across Olivet's program, many Californians end up weighing a Nevada preceptor within driving range against extended stays with family in an approved state farther away.
Holding a California RN license does not open California for Olivet FNP hours. The block comes from Olivet's list, not from your license.
How California regulates NP students and preceptors
California is exacting about licensure in NP education. Its nursing regulations, 16 CCR section 1486(d), bar a student of an NP program from outside California from clinical experiences in the state unless that student holds an active California RN license. California NP certification likewise sits on top of a California RN license.
Section 1486 also covers preceptors. Each one holds a California license in their own field and is qualified in the student's NP category; the program orients them, faculty evaluate them no less than every two years, and a written agreement signed by agency, preceptor and program spells out the role. AANP places California in the restricted practice tier, where standardized protocol agreements govern certain settings and procedures. Olivet's file does not present any of these rules as the reason for California's status.
Where California's NPs practice
Greater Los Angeles counts roughly 12.8 million residents, and the Inland Empire, the Bay Area and San Diego add several million each. Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, University of California Health with its six campus systems, Stanford Health Care and Cedars-Sinai are among the biggest systems; each one's own pages say how it handles students. They matter most for NEL and RN-BSN students and for career plans after graduation.
NEL and RN-BSN students living in California
For NEL students, Olivet demands an approved state yet leaves the list unpublished, and the FNP file never mentions NEL. Before asking a California nurse educator or leader to host NRSG 620, get the SON Clinical Coordinator's word on which list applies.
For RN-BSN students, Olivet describes practicum hours as done in the student's own community, but the RN-BSN is missing from the disclosures page, so the coordinator is the right person to confirm California. Whatever the answer, any clinical time in the state calls for a California RN license, since the compact does not reach California.

Questions Olivet students ask
Can I do Olivet FNP clinicals in California if I hold a California license?
No. Your license is not what stands in the way. Olivet's March 2026 file lists California as Not Approved, and no Olivet student, resident or visitor, may complete FNP practicum hours there. Your California license stays useful for work and for any NEL or RN-BSN practicum the SON Clinical Coordinator confirms.
Will my California RN license work in Nevada?
No. Neither state belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact, so there is no multistate privilege between them. A Nevada site will need to see a Nevada RN license, and Olivet needs it active and unencumbered as well. Leave room for the Nevada application in your timeline before the clinical course opens.
Can I become an FNP in California after graduating from Olivet?
Olivet's Not Approved label means it has not determined whether its FNP satisfies California's requirements, and the license you would seek here after graduating falls within that question. California also requires a California RN license before NP certification. If you plan to practice here, put the question to FNPpracticum@olivet.edu and to California's nursing board early, before committing to the program.
Which Olivet nursing programs can a Californian take?
Olivet's accreditation sheet names every state as a place its online programs are offered, and no California restriction on admission appears in its pages. For the FNP, every clinical hour happens outside California. For the NEL tracks, the RN-BSN and the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, confirm with the SON Clinical Coordinator where practicum hours may happen before you enroll.
