When a missing preceptor delays your Olivet graduation

At Olivet Nazarene University, a clinical course that cannot start on time seldom costs just one session. The courses behind it move, the May commencement for MSN graduates can slide by a full year, and several clocks in the handbook keep ticking while you wait. The answer is to plan preceptors for every clinical still ahead of you, not only the next one.

How one late clinical moves everything after it

Olivet publishes a sample course order for each track instead of separate full-time and part-time plans, and the clinical courses sit at the end of it in a fixed line. When a preceptor is missing for any course in that line, each course behind it waits, the FNP Immersion included. For NEL students, a practicum that runs into its X grade adds up to eight weeks, and one that passes 16 weeks adds a full retake.

May-only commencement

Olivet's MSN handbook holds MSN commencement only in May and says certificate students are not part of the ceremony. The residential 2026-27 calendar sets the ceremony for May 8, 2027. A finish that slips from spring into summer can therefore mean nearly a year before you walk, even when the program itself ends only weeks late. The steps after graduation move too: an FNP graduate sits the ANCC or AANPCB exam, and Illinois issues the APRN license only after national certification.

Walking and finishing are separate events. Ask the Online Advising Team how a later completion date is recorded, and file the intent-to-graduate form through the my.olivet.edu portal when your handbook calls for it. If an employer or a job offer is waiting on the credential, share the revised date with them as soon as you know it.

Clocks that keep running while you wait

A delay is not a pause button. Several of Olivet's rules measure time in years, and a long gap in the clinical sequence can bring them into play.

Aging clinicals. A clinical course that is over two years old by the time you complete the program may have to be audited, or backed up with continuing education or a competency check.
Aging courses. Any course more than five years old has to be taken again.
Retakes after a long break. A retake that follows a break of more than a year can be a full course again rather than an audit.
The RN hours rule. FNP students who have not yet logged 2,000 RN hours face a deadline at the end of NRSG 681, and missing it means a temporary withdrawal; the 2,000 RN hours rule page explains it.
Compliance renewals. TB and flu are yearly, BLS must stay valid through each practicum, and each practicum has its own drug screen window. A long delay means renewing items you already paid for.

Pausing on purpose instead of drifting

If a clinical cannot start this session, a planned pause protects you far better than an empty course shell. Olivet permits leave for any reason and for as long as you need, arranged through the Online Advising Team. The catch is coming back: the Return Form must reach Olivet two weeks before your first clinical course back, or your start may slip a second time.

Silence costs more. Once you pass 29 days away from a course without contacting anyone, Olivet withdraws you administratively with a W, and the progression rules treat that as a failure. A deliberate withdrawal is cleaner, but you still owe the course tuition and your finish date shifts. The leave and delays page covers each path in full.

A recovery plan that holds

Map what is left with your advisorList every remaining course in order with its likely start date, and confirm which curriculum you are in.

Questions Olivet students ask

If I finish my Olivet MSN in the summer, when can I walk?

Olivet's MSN handbook holds MSN commencement only in May, so a summer or fall finish points to the following May. The ceremony and the end of your program are different events, so ask the Online Advising Team how and when your completion will be recorded.

Do Olivet certificate students have a graduation ceremony?

No. The MSN handbook leaves certificate students out of commencement. That covers both the PG-APRN (FNP) and Post-Bachelor's NEL certificates, so for certificate students the target is the completion date itself rather than a May ceremony. A slipped clinical therefore costs certificate students weeks, not a year spent waiting for a ceremony.

Can I take two clinical courses at once to catch up?

Olivet publishes a sample course order only, with no separate full-time or part-time plans, and each FNP clinical is paired with its didactic course. Whether you can double up is a question for your advisor and the FNP/PG-APRN Program Director, not something to plan around until they agree.

Will my earlier clinical courses expire during a delay?

Eventually they can. Olivet sets a two-year window: clinicals finished more than two years before program completion may need an audit, continuing education or a competency check. At five years, any course must be repeated. A long delay early in the clinical sequence is the case to watch most closely.

Will I lose my preceptor if my course moves to a later session?

Only if their schedule cannot take the new dates. Tell your preceptor about the change as soon as you know, ask whether the later session works, and check with the SON Clinical Coordinator whether their approval still stands, since Olivet's handbooks do not say.
