Olivet's online nursing programs from Mississippi
Mississippi is listed as Not Approved in Olivet Nazarene University's FNP disclosure of March 12, 2026, and Olivet bars FNP practicum hours at every Mississippi site. Arkansas is the only bordering state on Olivet's approved list, so Mississippi FNP students plan clinicals there or in another approved state, while NEL and RN-BSN students confirm their own rules separately.

Olivet's Mississippi entries
The FNP entry marks a question Olivet has left open, whether its FNP satisfies Mississippi's requirements, and it carries no Mississippi-specific reason. A prospective student in Jackson or on the Gulf Coast should build the clinical plan around approved states from the start, and an Olivet student anywhere else should cross Mississippi off the list of possible FNP sites.

Why Memphis does not solve it, and where Arkansas does
Part of north Mississippi belongs to the Memphis metro. Tennessee, though, sits on Olivet's Not Approved list too, so a Memphis practice cannot host Olivet FNP hours. The same metro reaches into Arkansas, an approved state, which puts approved ground within the metro for students in the state's northwest corner.
Alabama and Louisiana, the remaining neighbors, are both Not Approved. Mississippi and Arkansas each joined the multistate compact in 2018. Mississippi's board adds a useful point: when your declared home state is a member and your license is in good standing, you may practice in other member states, and an employer there cannot require its own state's license. Mississippi's IHL review of out-of-state programs
In Mississippi, degree programs answer to the state's higher education trustees, a body called IHL, while the nursing board handles licenses and the practical nursing schools. IHL expects nursing programs from other states, at any degree level, to meet Mississippi standards when their students train in the state, and it counts a clinical practicum there as physical presence. That sets off an IHL Nursing Education review lasting up to three months, which IHL's procedures manual asks outside programs to request four months ahead or earlier. SARA participation, or separate state authorization, is required as well.
Olivet is a SARA participant, with the Illinois Board of Higher Education as its state portal agency, though nothing on its pages mentions an IHL review. IHL standards also want every graduate clinical student licensed as an RN, with no encumbrance, in whichever state the clinical sits. NEL and RN-BSN students should get the SON Clinical Coordinator's answer before planning a Mississippi practicum. Nothing in Olivet's file links IHL's process to Mississippi's FNP status.
Reduced practice and Mississippi health systems
AANP puts Mississippi in its reduced practice group, where each NP works under a board-approved collaboration with a Mississippi physician or dentist. Big names in the state's health care include UMMC, North Mississippi Health Services, Forrest Health, Singing River and the Memphis-based Baptist Memorial, which runs hospitals in Mississippi. Jackson is the largest metro wholly inside the state, followed by Gulfport-Biloxi.
Applicants, NEL and RN-BSN students
- Applying from Mississippi. Olivet's pages name no state where it refuses admission; the FNP limit concerns clinical sites. Decide which approved state will host your FNP hours before you apply.
- NEL students. NEL practicums must be in an approved state, and no NEL roster exists in print. The SON Clinical Coordinator can tell you which roster governs yours.
- RN-BSN students. Olivet places RN-BSN practicum hours in the student's home community, yet the track is absent from the disclosures page. Confirm Mississippi with the coordinator.
- Certificate students. Only the FNP track is named in the file. The certificate page requires an approved state; the coordinator can say how Mississippi is treated.

Can I do Olivet FNP hours at a Memphis clinic?
No. Memphis is in Tennessee, which Olivet's March 2026 file lists as Not Approved alongside Mississippi. A practice in the Arkansas part of the Memphis metro is in an approved state and can be considered once Olivet approves the preceptor. Confirm the practice's street address, not just its metro, before asking anyone to precept you.
Does my Mississippi license cover an Arkansas clinical?
A multistate Mississippi license does, because both states have belonged to the compact since 2018. A single-state Mississippi license stops at the river. Olivet wants your RN license current and unencumbered in the clinical's host state, so confirm your license type before the Arkansas site begins onboarding.
Who oversees nursing programs in Mississippi?
Degree programs fall under the IHL trustees, while the Mississippi Board of Nursing licenses nurses and approves practical nursing programs. Degree programs from other states that offer clinicals in Mississippi go through IHL's nursing education review. It has no bearing on Olivet's FNP list.
What if I move from Mississippi to Arkansas during the FNP?
