Olivet Nazarene University approves Rhode Island for FNP practicum hours in its March 2026 disclosure, and AANP counts Rhode Island among the full practice states. What trips students up is the map: greater Providence spills into Massachusetts, a state that has passed the nurse compact but not yet switched it on.

Rhode Island's standing with Olivet
If you live in Rhode Island, Olivet lets you complete FNP practicum hours at home. Certificate students check with the coordinator whether the FNP entry applies to them. NEL practicums also need an approved state, and Olivet's RN-BSN page tells students living outside Illinois to do practicum hours where they live. Rhode Island's regulation, and one open question
The state's nursing regulation, 216-RICR-40-05-3, is about approval of basic nursing programs located in Rhode Island. It sets no step requiring a school from another state to get board approval before its students begin Rhode Island clinicals. Nurse licensing sits with the Rhode Island Department of Health, and the board there carries the name Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education.
The open question is a registry. Rhode Island programs the board approves must show, in their contracts with clinical agencies, that they take an active part in a statewide central clinical placement registry. Whether schools from other states are expected to join is not addressed, so if a Providence-area site raises it, take it to the SON Clinical Coordinator.

The Providence-Warwick metro held roughly 1.7 million people in 2025, with the Rhode Island portion a little above 1.1 million. Crossing into Massachusetts or Connecticut
Since January 1, 2024, the date Rhode Island returned to the nurse compact, licenses issued to residents who qualify have been multistate. One of those reaches Connecticut, whose compact membership took effect October 1, 2025. Massachusetts is a different story. Its lawmakers passed the compact in November 2024, but implementation is aimed at May 2027, so for now a clinic over the Massachusetts line requires Massachusetts licensure. Olivet approves both neighbors for FNP hours. Rhode Island has no APRN Compact law, and Olivet's own license rule is summarized under RN license for clinicals.

Is Rhode Island approved for Olivet FNP clinical hours?
It is. Olivet's out-of-state APRN disclosure, dated March 12, 2026, places Rhode Island among approved states. You will still need an Olivet-approved preceptor and a current, unencumbered RN license valid for Rhode Island practice; your own Rhode Island multistate license qualifies, as does one from any other compact home state.
What if the best preceptor I find is across the Massachusetts line?
Olivet approves Massachusetts for FNP hours, so the location is fine. Licensing is the hurdle. Massachusetts passed the Nurse Licensure Compact, yet implementation is still pending, targeted for May 2027, and until then a clinic there requires you to hold a Massachusetts RN license.
What is the clinical placement registry a Rhode Island site might mention?
It is a statewide registry that Rhode Island's nursing regulation writes into the clinical agency agreements of board-approved Rhode Island programs, which must show active participation. The regulation does not say whether schools from other states are included. When a site mentions it, the SON Clinical Coordinator can explain Olivet's approach.
Does Olivet have to register with Rhode Island before I start clinicals?
Regulation 216-RICR-40-05-3 gives schools based elsewhere no approval step to complete before their students train in Rhode Island. Olivet participates in SARA through the Illinois Board of Higher Education, but SARA stops short of nursing board rules, so for anything particular to Rhode Island, the SON Clinical Coordinator remains your contact.
