Olivet clinicals in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is on Olivet Nazarene University's approved list for FNP practicum hours. What takes planning is local: the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing screens schools headquartered in other states before their students train here, and the compact license the state adopted in 2024 is still waiting to switch on.

How Olivet lists Massachusetts
Approved puts Massachusetts in the group where Olivet has found its FNP meets the state's requirements, so FNP hours can be logged here. The file is silent on the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, and the education and leadership tracks have no published state list, so students in those tracks put the Massachusetts question to the SON Clinical Coordinator. The board's Part A and Part B filings
Massachusetts regulation 244 CMR 6.03(2) covers a nursing school whose parent college is headquartered outside Massachusetts. Before that school's students learn in a Massachusetts classroom or clinic, the board signs off, and its page sets out two filings and a letter.
- Part A, every yearThe parent college applies once a year, a full six months or more before its first Massachusetts clinical placement.
- Part B, placement by placementEach student's placement goes in 30 or more days ahead. Edits are due two weeks before day one, and any change after that is reported within a week.
- The approval letterNo student starts until the board's letter is in hand.
Read closely, the board's criteria are written around schools whose graduates take the RN or PN licensing exam, and graduate or APRN tracks go unmentioned. How Olivet handles Massachusetts is therefore a question for the SON Clinical Coordinator or the FNPpracticum@olivet.edu mailbox, asked before you commit to a preceptor.
A Massachusetts license while the compact waits
The Nurse Licensure Compact became Massachusetts law in November 2024, yet the board treats it as dormant until the rollout is done. It received a conditional green light on FBI record checks in May 2026 and now aims for May 2027. Until then, a compact license from Maine, Rhode Island or any other member state does not let you practice in Massachusetts, and nurses use today's Massachusetts application.
If your clinical site is here, then, plan on a Massachusetts RN license; Olivet's expectations for that license are on your RN license for clinicals. Massachusetts has not joined the separate APRN Compact either.
Boston, Worcester, Springfield and the New Hampshire line
AANP counts Massachusetts as a full practice state, with a two-year supervised stretch under a qualified APRN or physician before an NP works alone. Whether a prospective preceptor has finished that stretch matters less than Olivet's approval, which judges fit either way.
By 2025 Census estimates, Greater Boston holds about 4.6 million Massachusetts residents, the Worcester and Springfield metros about 889,000 and 464,000, and the state's share of the Providence metro about 594,000. Students research Baystate Health out west, UMass Memorial Health, and in Boston, Mass General Brigham, Boston Medical Center and Beth Israel Lahey Health; every one of them sets student rules on its own site.
Watch the northern and western edges. The Boston metro runs into New Hampshire, one of the states closed to Olivet FNP hours, and New York to the west is closed as well. A site over either line cannot host your FNP hours, however short the drive. Connecticut and Rhode Island are approved.

Is Massachusetts open for my Olivet FNP hours?
Yes. Massachusetts sits in the approved group of Olivet's FNP disclosure dated March 12, 2026. Before choosing a site, ask the SON Clinical Coordinator how Olivet treats the board's approval process for schools headquartered outside Massachusetts, since that process ends with a board letter that must arrive before students start.
Does my compact license from another state cover Massachusetts yet?
Not yet. The compact passed in 2024, but the board holds it back until the rollout is finished, which it hopes to reach in May 2027. In the meantime a license from a member state such as Maine does not reach Massachusetts patients, and a Massachusetts license is what a Massachusetts site will expect.
Can I train in southern New Hampshire if I live near the border?
Not for FNP hours. New Hampshire belongs to Olivet's Not Approved group, and Olivet keeps FNP practicum hours out of those states for every student, Massachusetts residents included. Keep your sites in Massachusetts or in an approved neighbor such as Connecticut or Rhode Island.
Can a Massachusetts preceptor take me alongside another student?
Up to a point. For schools based outside Massachusetts, the board's criteria allow no more than two students per preceptor and ten per faculty member. Olivet's own preceptor criteria sit in the Canvas requirements course for your track, so check both before a busy preceptor says yes.
