Connecticut clinical hours for Olivet Nazarene students
Olivet Nazarene University's FNP disclosure approves Connecticut for practicum hours, and since October 2025 Connecticut nurses have been able to hold a multistate compact license. For many Olivet students here the real question is geography: New York, right across the western line, is one of the 13 states where Olivet allows no FNP hours.

Connecticut in Olivet's licensure files
Connecticut residents in the Olivet FNP can keep every clinical course in-state. Certificate students in Connecticut should note that the file skips the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, even though that program's page insists on an approved state; the SON Clinical Coordinator can say whether Connecticut counts. NEL students face the same approved-state rule without a published list, and RN-BSN students do their hours in their home community. The disclosures explainer covers what each label means.

Keep your hours on the Connecticut side
Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury, a metro of about 978,000, runs right up to New York. Olivet's rule for a Not Approved state is plain: no FNP practicum hours there, and a Connecticut address does not change that. That matters in western Connecticut, where Northwell Health, a New York-based system, now runs former Nuvance Health hospitals such as Danbury Hospital. A Connecticut location sits inside an approved state; the same system's New York sites sit outside Olivet's list.
To the north and east, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are both approved in Olivet's FNP file. The full list of excluded states is on FNP Not Approved states.
An offer from a New York practice cannot count toward Olivet FNP hours, however short the drive from Stamford or Danbury.
How Connecticut's nursing regulations treat outside programs
Nursing oversight in Connecticut belongs to the Board of Examiners for Nursing, housed in the state Department of Public Health. Its regulations (section 20-90-59) treat an out-of-state program as deemed approved once three things line up: approval from the home board, a curriculum meeting Connecticut's RN rule, and home-state licensure standards that match or exceed Connecticut's. The rule describes no separate filing. The education regulations are written for programs that lead to licensure (20-90-46), and they say nothing about post-licensure or APRN programs such as Olivet's.
Programs those regulations do reach must honor Connecticut's written-contract and ratio rules at Connecticut agencies, and their on-site clinical instructors hold a Connecticut RN license along with both a bachelor's and a master's, one of those in nursing. If a Connecticut site asks which rules Olivet follows, route the question through the SON Clinical Coordinator.
Collaboration first: Connecticut's practice rules
Full practice arrives in stages here. AANP's summary has a Connecticut NP collaborate with a physician through a three-year minimum that must also total 2,000 hours before independent practice begins, so your preceptor pool includes both collaborating NPs and independent ones. Who qualifies to precept an Olivet FNP student is spelled out in the Canvas requirements course, and the final say rests with Olivet, as preceptor approval describes.
Greater Hartford leads Connecticut's metros with about 1.17 million people. The New Haven metro counts roughly 579,000, and Waterbury-Shelton about 463,000. Questions Olivet students ask
Is a Connecticut or multistate license enough for Olivet clinicals in Connecticut?
Connecticut's compact membership started October 1, 2025, a recent change for Olivet students there. According to the state health department, an RN student can now work there under a Connecticut license or under the multistate license issued by the student's compact home state. Olivet's own rule still applies: the license must be current and unencumbered for the state where you train.
Does Connecticut require preceptors to have two years of experience?
For RN education programs, Connecticut's section 20-90-51(f) sets a preceptor standard for advanced-level students: an RN license from Connecticut or the precepting state, a nursing bachelor's, and at least two years of experience in the specialty or role. For Olivet graduate students, though, the governing criteria are the ones in the Canvas requirements course, applied by Olivet when it signs off on a Connecticut preceptor.
Can eastern Connecticut students train in Rhode Island or Massachusetts?
Both states are approved in Olivet's FNP file. Rhode Island has been a compact state since January 8, 2024, while Massachusetts enacted the compact in November 2024 and targets implementation for May 2027, so check the Massachusetts board before relying on a multistate license there. Do Olivet's Connecticut rules cover the Post-Graduate FNP certificate?
The March 2026 file is organized around the FNP track and is silent about the certificate. Because the certificate page still limits practicum hours to approved states, have the SON Clinical Coordinator confirm Connecticut for you before a preceptor signs on.
