South Carolina clinical hours for Olivet students
Olivet Nazarene University lists South Carolina as approved for FNP practicum hours. Two state rules shape the search in ways worth knowing: the board's review of out-of-state schools is aimed at first-licensure programs, and the preceptor tax credit only counts students of South Carolina schools, so what persuades a preceptor to take you is the teaching itself.

Olivet's South Carolina results at a glance
Approved is the answer South Carolina FNP students hope for, and it applies statewide, from Greenville to Charleston to the smallest county seat. Post-graduate certificate students should ask the SON Clinical Coordinator to confirm the FNP entry covers their hours. Regulation 91-6 and first-licensure programs
Under South Carolina's Regulation 91-6, a nursing school headquartered in another state needs the board's sign-off before it holds clinicals that ready students for their first license. The conditions are demanding: the school stays fully approved at home; its nursing faculty, licensed in South Carolina or another compact state, supervise directly, on site and on shift; each clinical affiliate signs a written agreement; and any precepted experience runs under South Carolina rules. After approval, a written notice to the board is due within 15 days of any change in compliance.
APRN and RN-to-BSN education lie outside what the regulation addresses. As a licensed RN in graduate study, you are not in the group it was written for, and if a South Carolina site asks, the SON Clinical Coordinator can speak for Olivet.
Practice agreements and the state's metros
In AANP's grouping, South Carolina is restricted. An NP's delegated acts depend on a practice agreement signed with a physician, and controlled substances carry supply limits.
Three metros reach or approach a million residents in 2025 estimates. Greenville-Anderson-Greer tops the million mark, and Charleston-North Charleston edges out Columbia, both a bit below 900,000; the South Carolina part of greater Charlotte adds some 450,000. Systems to look into include MUSC Health (the Medical University of South Carolina's system), Prisma Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, and McLeod Health and Lexington Health, all with their own NP student processes.
The preceptor tax credit, and who it reaches
South Carolina Code section 12-6-3800 offers a tax credit, per qualifying rotation, to physician, APRN and PA preceptors who teach without pay, and a deduction for rotations beyond the credited ones. To claim it, a preceptor must complete at least two rotations a year, each running 160 hours or longer in the settings the law lists, and must take part in Medicaid, with a minimum count of Medicaid and Medicare patients.
The learners must attend a public or independent South Carolina institution. Olivet is in Illinois, so time spent teaching you falls outside the credit. Lead instead with your course, your schedule and how Olivet approves preceptors. The credit was extended to tax year 2029 by 2024 Act No. 217, although a Department of Revenue ruling still lists the earlier 2026 repeal.
Licensing and the two borders
South Carolina has been a compact member since the start date, January 19, 2018. With a South Carolina multistate license you can train in North Carolina, which Olivet approves for FNP hours. Georgia belongs to the compact as well, but Olivet places it in the Not Approved group. The APRN Compact has not passed in South Carolina. Can South Carolina residents take Olivet's online FNP program?
Yes. Olivet runs its online programs in all 50 states, and its March 12, 2026 disclosure approves South Carolina for FNP practicum hours. Classes happen online; clinical hours happen in person, in South Carolina or another approved state, under a preceptor Olivet has approved.
Does South Carolina's board have to approve Olivet's FNP program?
Regulation 91-6 calls for board approval when an out-of-state program's clinicals lead to a first license, and it is silent on APRN education. It was written with pre-licensure students in mind, not RNs in graduate programs. If a site asks about South Carolina approval, the SON Clinical Coordinator answers for Olivet.
Can I cross into Georgia for FNP clinicals?
No. Georgia is in the Not Approved group on Olivet's disclosure, and no one in the FNP program may complete practicum hours there, whatever state they live in. North Carolina, across South Carolina's northern border, is approved. The complete list and its meaning are on states where FNP hours are not approved.
Does precepting me earn a South Carolina tax credit?
Not for the time spent with you. Under S.C. Code 12-6-3800, qualifying students attend a public or independent South Carolina institution, and Olivet is an Illinois university. The same preceptor might still claim it for students from in-state schools if the credit's other conditions are met.
