With North Carolina on the approved side, an Olivet FNP student anywhere from the mountains to the coast can train in-state. Only the FNP track is named in Olivet's file, and the NEL pages demand an approved state without listing any, so students in those tracks run North Carolina past the SON Clinical Coordinator.

What the NCBON regulates, and what it leaves to schools

North Carolina's board writes its out-of-state rule, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, for nursing students who hold no license yet. Before such a student sets foot in a North Carolina agency, the agency's nursing leadership must win NCBON approval at least a month ahead, with evidence that the on-site supervisor is licensed in North Carolina. Olivet's graduate students are licensed RNs, and for them the board is direct: its education FAQ puts post-licensure graduate programs, in-state or out, beyond its approval power, alongside RN-BSN and doctoral programs.

SARA gets a mention in that FAQ as well. North Carolina has been a SARA state since June 2016, and the board notes that someone enrolled at a college approved under SARA may qualify for North Carolina field placements while studying with that college. Olivet takes part in SARA via the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

Career-long physician ties and the major metros

AANP files North Carolina under restricted practice. Every NP there works under a physician agreement that lasts the whole career, and NP licensure is governed by a Joint Subcommittee of the state's nursing and medical boards. A North Carolina preceptor brings that physician tie along, and Olivet's approval still decides whether the NP suits your course.

On the North Carolina side, the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro counts about 2.48 million people, and it spills into South Carolina. Raleigh-Cary is near 1.6 million, with Greensboro-High Point near 806,000 and Winston-Salem near 712,000. Students tend to research ECU Health in the east, Novant Health, Duke Health, UNC Health and Charlotte's Atrium Health, which belongs to Advocate Health; each publishes its own student terms.

Questions Olivet students ask

Must the NCBON sign off on Olivet's FNP before I train there?

It has no role. The board's education FAQ places graduate programs that follow the RN license, from any state, outside its approval authority; its out-of-state rule targets students with no license yet. Olivet's own March 12, 2026 FNP disclosure counts North Carolina as approved.

My only license is a single-state Illinois license. Can I train in North Carolina?

Not on that license by itself. The NCBON sends graduate students who lack both a North Carolina and a multistate license to its Licensure Department, by way of the board's online contact form, to learn what clinicals require. Olivet adds its own condition: a license valid where the clinic is.

Can I do FNP hours in Tennessee from western North Carolina?

No. Tennessee appears on Olivet's Not Approved list, and Olivet bars FNP practicum hours there for every student, whichever state they live in. Georgia is in the same group. South Carolina and Virginia are approved, so their sites stay open to you.

Could my preceptor practice just over the line in South Carolina, near Charlotte?

As far as Olivet's list goes, yes: South Carolina is approved for FNP hours. With both Carolinas in the compact, one multistate license from either state covers practice on both sides of the metro. The South Carolina site will still run its own onboarding.
