The Olivet drug screen: timing, THC and what a positive result means

What Olivet's handbook requires

Olivet's New Curriculum handbook for MSN and PG-APRN students lists the drug screen first among graduate compliance items, paired with the criminal background check. Two details define it: a clear result has to arrive between four and two weeks before the practicum opens, and THC is one of the substances tested.

Your agreement to it comes early. At admission, graduate students sign a consent to both the criminal background check and drug testing, so the screen is a condition you accepted before your first course. The result is recorded in your compliance system, which is Verified Credentials QualifiedFirst under the new handbook and CastleBranch under the current one.

The two handbooks disagree on that vendor, so use the one your own handbook version names. The clinical compliance overview explains the split and lists every other item that has to be in place by your first clinical day.

Timing the screen against your start date

Read the 2 to 4 week rule as a window with two edges. A result that clears more than four weeks out falls outside it, and a test taken too close to the start may not clear in time. THC is on the panel

The handbook says the screen includes THC, and it states that once for all graduate students. It names no exception by state, so plan on the same screen wherever you live and wherever your clinical site is.

This matters for an online program. Olivet's FNP students train in their own areas across the 37 approved states plus DC, and NEL students complete practicums where they live. The handbook's rule travels with you, so the question to ask is not what your state allows but what Olivet's screen tests for.

If you take a prescribed medication that could affect a result, raise it before you test rather than after. The two graduate Program Directors, one for FNP/PG-APRN and one for the MSN, handle drug-screen outcomes, so they are the right people to ask how a documented prescription is handled.

What a positive result means

Olivet's handbook sets three consequences

Withdrawal from all courses, not only the clinical course you were about to begin.
A report to the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) and/or the state that licenses you.
Six months away from clinical settings before you may reapply.

The Program Directors handle drug-screen outcomes, and the MSN Committee receives the results of for-cause screens. Formal policy appeals are heard by the Academic Standards Committee, and the chain of command ends with the School of Nursing's Associate Dean.

RN-BSN and Traditional BSN timing, and the cost lines

In the RN-BSN, students whose program began from August 23, 2026 receive testing instructions by email around the time of NRSG 302. They pay Verified Credentials QualifiedFirst themselves, the urine screen has to be cleared before the palliative and end-of-life course, NRSG 364, opens, and a clear result then carries them through twelve months of clinical hours. RN-BSN students who started core courses before August 2026 cannot begin NRSG 326 hours until the background check and drug screen are complete; the RN-BSN practicums page covers both versions.

Does Olivet's clinical drug screen include THC?

Yes. The graduate handbook states that the screen includes THC, and it gives no state-by-state exception. Students living or training in any state should plan on the same panel. If a prescribed medication could affect your result, talk with your Program Director before you test, since the Program Directors handle drug-screen outcomes.

Can I take the drug screen at admission and be done with it?

Admission is when you sign the consent, not when you test for your practicum. Your result has to come back clear no earlier than four weeks and no later than two weeks before the practicum, so a test taken months earlier falls outside that window. Olivet's fee sheet also lists a yearly compliance renewal for graduate students.

Who at Olivet sees a drug screen result?

The Program Directors handle drug-screen outcomes, and the MSN Committee receives for-cause screen results. Olivet also sends a positive result to IDFPR and/or whichever state licenses you. Can I come back to Olivet after a positive drug screen?

The handbook sets a six-month period away from clinical settings before a student may reapply, after withdrawal from all courses. Questions about your own case go to your Program Director, and formal appeals of a policy decision go to the Academic Standards Committee. The report to your licensing board happens separately.

How long is an RN-BSN drug screen good for?

For RN-BSN students on the fall 2026 handbook, both screenings are due to be cleared before NRSG 364 opens, and from then on they count for a full year of clinical hours. If your remaining practicum hours fall beyond that year, ask about renewal before the course starts.
