Olivet nursing clinicals and Wyoming
Wyoming appears among the 13 Not Approved states in Olivet Nazarene University's FNP disclosure of March 12, 2026, so Olivet does not permit FNP practicum hours there. The label reflects a question Olivet has not yet settled: whether its FNP meets Wyoming's requirements. Every state bordering Wyoming is on the approved list, so an FNP student living there plans clinicals in Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Utah, South Dakota or Nebraska.

Wyoming's status in Olivet's files
For a Wyoming applicant the practical reading is short: apply, study from home, and expect FNP hours in a neighboring state. For a current FNP student living in Cheyenne, Casper or Gillette, each clinical course needs a preceptor across the state line, and the file attaches no explanation to Wyoming's status.

What the Wyoming board expects from outside schools
Wyoming's board, the WSBN, handles outside schools in its Chapter 6 rules, and the first condition applies to all of them: a school must either register with the state's Department of Education or hold approval through NC-SARA. Olivet participates in SARA by way of the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Beyond that, the board sorts programs by level. APRN, MSN and RN-to-BSN programs count as post-licensure, so they skip board approval, yet they still send the board a letter each time one of their students is scheduled for clinical learning in Wyoming, and the board supplies a template for it.
The school also needs a signed written agreement with the host facility before the first clinical day, with a copy held for the board. Pre-licensure programs face a fuller permission request. For an NEL or RN-BSN student whom Olivet clears for Wyoming, the letter and the agreement are Olivet's to handle, so raise them early with the SON Clinical Coordinator. None of these rules touches Olivet's FNP listing.
Six approved neighbors, long distances
Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska ring Wyoming, and Olivet approves all six. Distance is the real constraint. Cheyenne, the largest metro at roughly 103,000 residents, lies close to northern Colorado, while Casper and the Gillette area sit farther from any border. Students in the northeast may find South Dakota or Montana nearer, and western Wyoming looks toward Idaho or Utah.
Olivet's FNP carries 750 clinical hours, so most Wyoming students weigh a regular commute against blocks of clinical days away from home. Sheridan Memorial Hospital, Ivinson Memorial Hospital, Campbell County Health, Banner Wyoming Medical Center and Cheyenne Regional Medical Center are familiar names across the state; for Olivet students they matter only on a track cleared for Wyoming.
A Wyoming compact license crosses every border
Multistate licensing has applied in Wyoming since January 2018, and each of the six neighbors is a compact member too. Hold a multistate license issued by Wyoming as your home state and you can train in Colorado, Utah or any other bordering state on it, with no second RN license. Questions Olivet students ask
Wyoming enacted the APRN Compact. Does that change Olivet's listing?
No. The APRN Compact concerns licenses for practicing APRNs and will not operate until seven states enact it. Olivet's March 2026 file is a separate judgment about its own FNP, and it lists Wyoming as Not Approved without stating a reason. For out-of-state FNP questions the file names FNPpracticum@olivet.edu.
Is northern Colorado a realistic option from Cheyenne?
For many Cheyenne students it is the most practical one. Colorado sits on Olivet's approved list and in the compact, so a Wyoming multistate license carries over. Olivet still approves each preceptor, and Colorado sites run their own onboarding. The Colorado guide covers that state.
Does an Olivet RN-BSN student in Wyoming need board permission?
Wyoming treats RN-to-BSN programs as post-licensure, which spares them board approval, but the school must notify the board in writing and hold an agreement with the clinical facility before hours begin. Olivet's position is that RN-BSN students living outside Illinois log practicum hours locally; the SON Clinical Coordinator can tell you how Olivet meets Wyoming's notice step. Can I count hours at a Wyoming clinic a few miles from the Colorado line?
No. Olivet's rule follows the address where the hours are completed, so a practice on the Wyoming side cannot host FNP hours however close to Colorado it sits. Choose a preceptor whose clinical days happen in an approved state for the full course.
