Olivet Nazarene clinicals in Idaho
Olivet Nazarene University's FNP disclosure approves Idaho for practicum hours, and Idaho's nursing rules give an Olivet FNP student explicit room to work at the advanced practice level during clinicals. The complication is the neighborhood: Washington, Oregon and Wyoming, three of the six states around Idaho, are all Not Approved in Olivet's FNP file.

Idaho in Olivet's disclosure files
Living in Idaho, an Olivet FNP student can keep all practicum hours in the state. Idaho students in the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate need the SON Clinical Coordinator's word, because the file names only the FNP. NEL practicums call for an approved state with no NEL list posted, and RN-BSN hours happen in your home community. The licensure disclosures page explains each result in more depth.

How Idaho law treats APRN students
Idaho writes the student role into its rules. Subsection 100.12.a of the Idaho nursing rules (IDAPA 24.34.01) says that when advanced practice work is an integral piece of the curriculum, an RN studying in an APRN program with national accreditation, like Olivet's FNP, may perform it, provided the RN holds a current Idaho license or the compact privilege to practice there. A second provision, Idaho Code 54-1412, keeps students in approved programs from needing a license for functions tied to their formal instruction.
Preceptors face a level test. The board's education policy for faculty and preceptors (HP-BON-Education 1, in force since April 2024) puts every preceptor's license at the student's target level or above; for your Olivet FNP clinicals, think APRN or above. Olivet adds its own criteria through the Canvas requirements course and makes the final call on each Idaho preceptor, as preceptor requirements explains.
Idaho's approval rules (section 150 of the same chapter, plus Idaho Code 54-1406) concern programs taught in Idaho, and neither addresses clinicals arranged by a school from elsewhere. Schools like Olivet are pointed, on the board's web page, to an email contact for its licensing staff. That channel is for Olivet as an institution; bring your own questions to the SON Clinical Coordinator.
Three Not Approved neighbors
North Idaho borders Washington, western Idaho meets Oregon, and eastern Idaho touches Wyoming. Olivet bars FNP practicum hours in all three, and an Idaho home address makes no difference. Montana, Utah and Nevada are approved, so a border site to the east or south can still work. The complete list is on FNP Not Approved states.
A Washington, Oregon or Wyoming practice cannot host Olivet FNP hours, no matter how close it is to your Idaho home.
Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls
Boise City dwarfs Idaho's other metros, with roughly 864,000 residents. Coeur d'Alene has close to 192,000, and Idaho Falls and Twin Falls come in near 174,000 and 124,000. Among Idaho's large systems, Olivet students will run into Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, plus Saint Alphonsus Health System and St. Luke's Health System; every one of them publishes its own student terms.
AANP lists Idaho as full practice. Compact licensing reached Idaho on January 19, 2018, and an Idaho-issued multistate license also covers practice in compact neighbors like Utah and Montana. No APRN Compact law has passed in Idaho.

Questions Olivet students ask
I live in north Idaho. Can I train at a Washington practice?
No. Washington falls in the Not Approved group of Olivet's March 2026 FNP file; Olivet has not finished deciding whether its FNP meets Washington's requirements. Until then, a Washington site is closed to every Olivet FNP student, Idaho residents included, so keep the search in Idaho or approved Montana.
Does my Idaho preceptor need an APRN license?
Idaho's education policy ties the preceptor's license to the student's goal: it sits at your target level or higher, and for an Olivet FNP student that means an advanced practice license or higher. On Olivet's side, the Canvas requirements course sets the criteria and Olivet gives the final approval, so line up both standards before you ask an Idaho NP.
Is Idaho part of the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Yes. Idaho joined the compact on January 19, 2018, which lets an Olivet student train there on either an Idaho license or the multistate license from the student's own compact home state. Idaho has no APRN Compact law, so after graduation your advanced practice license is still issued state by state.
Can Olivet RN-BSN students in Idaho do practicum hours locally?
