Louisiana residents in Olivet's nursing programs
Olivet Nazarene University does not permit FNP practicum hours in Louisiana, one of the 13 states in the Not Approved group of its March 12, 2026 FNP disclosure. Louisiana FNP students complete clinicals in an approved state, with Texas and Arkansas on the border, and NEL and RN-BSN students check which rules apply to them before looking locally.

How Olivet's files list Louisiana
Two groups read this table differently. Applicants in New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Lafayette learn early that their FNP clinicals will happen in another state. Students living elsewhere learn that a Louisiana practice is off limits for FNP hours, even during a long family stay. Olivet's file gives Louisiana no individual explanation; the not approved states page covers the wider group.

Planning an FNP year from Louisiana
- Pick the approved stateTexas and Arkansas are the approved states on Louisiana's border. Mississippi, to the east, is Not Approved, so students in the eastern parishes face a longer trip. Shreveport-Bossier City sits closest to both approved neighbors.
- Check your license typeLouisiana began honoring the multistate compact on July 1, 2019, and Texas and Arkansas participate as well, so a Louisiana multistate license reaches practices in both. A single-state license does not. The RN license page covers Olivet's side of the rule.
- Start the search earlyOlivet wants FNP students to work their own contacts, colleagues and former coworkers first, and the SON Clinical Coordinator steps in after 30 unsuccessful attempts, possibly at a site outside your preferred area. A search across a state line adds steps, so begin well before the course.
- Approval and onboardingOlivet approves the preceptor; the site's onboarding and your compliance items then need to be complete before the first clinical day.
Louisiana's six-month rule for programs from other states
Louisiana keeps a close eye on nursing programs run from elsewhere. Section 3539 of the state's nursing rules (LAC 46:XLVII) makes any undergraduate or graduate program under another state's administrative control seek Louisiana State Board of Nursing approval before it teaches or places clinical students in Louisiana. Half a year's lead time is the floor. The request lists the clinical agencies and units and carries the curriculum, syllabi, catalog, facility survey, faculty qualification forms and exam pass data, and the program must already hold home-state approval, regional accreditation and national nursing accreditation. Approval runs up to three years.
After approval, graduate programs send the board a clinical spreadsheet within two weeks of each experience starting, faculty check in with preceptor and student weekly and visit at least once a term, and faculty teaching in the state hold a Louisiana license. Because the rule reaches every program level, NEL and RN-BSN students should ask the SON Clinical Coordinator whether a Louisiana practicum is possible before approaching anyone. Whether Olivet holds or has requested Louisiana approval is not stated on its pages, and its FNP file does not tie the rule to Louisiana's status.
Practice rules and major systems in Louisiana
Louisiana falls in AANP's reduced practice category, meaning a state-regulated collaboration with a physician governs at least part of each NP's practice. Ochsner Health, LCMC Health, FMOL Health, Willis-Knighton Health and Baton Rouge General are among the larger systems. New Orleans-Metairie is the biggest metro at about 971,000 people, with Baton Rouge close behind near 889,000, then Lafayette and Shreveport-Bossier City.

Questions Olivet students ask
Can I live in Louisiana and finish Olivet's FNP?
Olivet names no state closed to admission, and its online programs are listed as offered in all 50 states. The limit is on where you train: every FNP practicum hour must happen at a site in an approved state such as Texas or Arkansas. If your permanent address changes during the program, notify the Online Advising Team.
Would my Louisiana license cover a clinical in Texas?
A multistate Louisiana license would, because Louisiana and Texas are both compact members. A single-state license would not. Look up the license type on your record before a Texas site starts onboarding, and keep in mind Olivet wants the license unencumbered and valid wherever the clinical happens.
Is the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate barred in Louisiana too?
Olivet's disclosure speaks only of the FNP track, so the certificate's treatment is not spelled out. The certificate page does require practicum hours in an approved state. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator for a written answer on Louisiana before you contact any preceptor there, and keep it with your records.
Why is Louisiana on Olivet's Not Approved list?
Olivet does not say, for Louisiana or any other state in the group. The file says only that Olivet's decision on how its FNP measures up to Louisiana's requirements is still open. Out-of-state FNP questions go to FNPpracticum@olivet.edu, and only a newer version of the file would change Louisiana's status.
