Olivet Nazarene University approves Maine for FNP practicum hours, and that approval carries extra weight here. New Hampshire, the only state Maine touches, is one of the 13 where Olivet allows no FNP hours, so for a Maine student the whole search happens inside Maine.

What Olivet's files say about Maine
Approval means an Olivet FNP student living in Maine can complete practicum hours in the state. The disclosure names the FNP alone, so if you are in the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate, ask the SON Clinical Coordinator whether Maine carries over to your track. Maine NEL students face the approved-state rule without a list to consult, and RN-BSN practicum hours stay in your Maine community.

New Hampshire is off the list
Olivet's disclosure describes a Not Approved state as one where it has not yet determined whether the FNP meets licensure requirements. Olivet allows no FNP practicum hours in those states, and a Maine home address does not create an exception. For southern Maine students a practice across the line might look convenient on a map, but it cannot count toward an Olivet FNP clinical.
Massachusetts is approved in Olivet's file but shares no border with Maine, so in practice an Olivet student here looks for a Maine preceptor. The FNP Not Approved states page lists all 13 states and explains the rule.
A New Hampshire site cannot host Olivet FNP hours, even when you live in Maine.
Maine's practice rules and what they mean for your preceptor
In AANP's summary, a Maine NP reaches full practice after 24 months either supervised by another NP or a physician, or employed where a physician serves as medical director at the hospital or clinic. So an Olivet student in Maine may meet preceptors still inside that window and others well past it; either can fit your course, and Olivet approves every preceptor.
The Maine State Board of Nursing approves Maine-based prelicensure programs under its Chapter 7, a rule with nothing to say about out-of-state schools such as Olivet sending students to Maine clinical sites. Maine's student exemption in 32 MRSA section 2103(2) likewise reaches only students whose board-approved program ends in initial licensure. Olivet's graduate and RN-BSN students arrive already licensed, and Olivet wants that RN license current, unencumbered and valid in Maine on every clinical day.
Compact licensing has covered Maine since January 19, 2018; Olivet students can train there on a Maine license or on the multistate license from their own compact home state. Maine has no APRN Compact law. Your RN license for clinicals lays out the rest of Olivet's license rule.
Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
About 578,000 people live in the Portland-South Portland metro, Maine's largest; Bangor's metro has close to 158,000 and Lewiston-Auburn's roughly 116,000. Olivet students looking at Maine's big systems will find MaineHealth and Northern Light Health, plus MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare, each with its own student rotation terms. If your coursework turns to population health, Maine's public health agency is the Maine CDC, which sits within the state's health and human services department.

Questions Olivet students ask
Does a New Hampshire preceptor count if I live in southern Maine?
No. New Hampshire belongs to the Not Approved group in Olivet's FNP file, so no Olivet FNP hours can be logged there. Olivet looks at the state where the clinical happens rather than the state you live in, and a southern Maine address does not open that door; keep the search inside Maine or another approved state.
Can a newly licensed Maine NP precept me?
Possibly. A Maine NP's first 24 months run under a supervising physician or NP, or inside a hospital or clinic led by a physician medical director, before full independence. Whether a preceptor at that stage suits your Olivet course depends on what your Canvas requirements course asks of preceptors, so read it and check with your course faculty first.
Is my Maine license valid for clinicals in Massachusetts?
Not through the compact yet. Massachusetts lawmakers approved compact membership in November 2024, and its nursing board says the compact takes effect only after implementation wraps up, targeted for May 2027. Can Olivet RN-BSN students in Maine complete the hospice practicum locally?
Yes. Olivet's RN-BSN keeps practicum hours in each student's own area. In the new curriculum, NRSG 364 places you with a hospice nurse, and the new RN-BSN handbook leaves open who sets up that site. Raise it with your RN-BSN faculty at the start of the program, and see the RN-BSN practicums page.
