Maryland and its neighbors in Olivet's files
Olivet approves both Maryland and the District, which helps students in the Washington suburbs. Maryland students in the Post-Graduate APRN (FNP) certificate should check with the SON Clinical Coordinator, because the file addresses the FNP alone. NEL practicums need an approved state (Olivet lists none for NEL), and RN-BSN practicum hours are done where you live.

Studying online from Maryland
Maryland's Higher Education Commission would usually want an out-of-state school registered before it enrolls Marylanders online, yet schools approved for SARA are exempt (COMAR 13B.05.01.02). Olivet belongs to SARA through the Illinois Board of Higher Education. SARA covers the online program only; clinical rules stay with the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON).
Olivet students starting Maryland clinicals meet no published MBON approval step aimed at their school. When MBON does address schools from other states, it is about licensing their graduates: it offers a tool for judging substantial equivalency and keeps lists of out-of-state prelicensure programs it has and has not approved. For your FNP clinicals, Maryland's Health Occupations article (section 8-301(d)(2)) excuses a graduate APRN student in an accredited program from licensure for the advanced practice work that program requires.
Planning for Maryland certification after Olivet
Thinking of practicing in Maryland after Olivet? MBON approves each NP program itself before it will certify that program's graduates. If Olivet is missing from MBON's approved list, the Program Approval Form has to come from Olivet, since applicants cannot file it themselves. Look at the list early and, if needed, ask your advisor or the SON Clinical Coordinator how Olivet handles it long before graduation.
AANP places Maryland in its full practice group, on one condition: each NP attests to having spent 18 months mentored by a certified NP or by a physician. Maryland NPs at any stage of that path can be candidates, with Olivet's approval and your Canvas course criteria deciding.
Maryland's NP preceptorship tax credit
Under section 10-739 of the Tax-General article, an NP or physician who precepts NP students without pay, in a preceptorship the nursing board has approved, can earn a Maryland income tax credit. Qualifying takes a minimum of three community-based rotations, each at least 90 hours, in places the Maryland Department of Health lists as short of health care workers. The department awards the credit rotation by rotation, subject to a per-preceptor yearly ceiling and a statewide cap, and Chapter 416 of 2025 keeps the section in force through June 30, 2030.
The statute describes the students as NP students enrolled in a nursing program that Maryland's board recognizes. Whether an Olivet rotation fits is for MBON and the health department to decide, so a preceptor should confirm before counting on the credit.
Baltimore, the Capital suburbs and western Maryland
Greater Baltimore (the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson metro) holds roughly 2.86 million people, and another 2.52 million Marylanders live on their state's side of the Washington metro. Lexington Park's metro adds around 211,000, and about 158,000 more live in the Maryland part of Hagerstown-Martinsburg. Olivet students surveying the big systems will see MedStar Health, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Luminis Health, LifeBridge Health and UMMS, the University of Maryland Medical System; every one posts its own student terms.
Compact licensing has applied in Maryland since January 19, 2018, though no APRN Compact law has passed. North of the state, Pennsylvania is on Olivet's Not Approved list, while Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia are approved; the Delaware guide covers its notice rule.

Could my Olivet FNP clinical be in Washington, DC?
Olivet's March 2026 FNP disclosure lists the District of Columbia as approved, so a DC site fits Olivet's state rule. The District's own licensing requirements then apply at that site, and Olivet approves the preceptor. Confirm the plan with the SON Clinical Coordinator before you commit, especially if your only license is a Maryland one.
Can a Pennsylvania preceptor count for a Maryland student?
No. Pennsylvania is Not Approved in Olivet's FNP file, which closes it to Olivet FNP clinicals for everyone, Maryland residents too. If you live near that northern line, stay on the Maryland side or look to Delaware, Virginia or West Virginia, all three approved. The FNP Not Approved states page lists the others.
Is a Maryland RN license required for Olivet clinicals in Maryland?
Not always. Because Maryland is in the compact, its regulations allow practice on a multistate privilege, with Maryland law governing that work. Olivet asks that your RN license be current, unencumbered and valid where you train, so either a Maryland-issued license or the multistate license from your compact home state meets it.
Is the Post-Graduate FNP certificate approved for Maryland?
Olivet has not said. Its disclosure lists states for the FNP track, and the certificate page asks only for an approved state, so get the SON Clinical Coordinator's confirmation for Maryland before you lock in a preceptor. If you hope to practice in Maryland afterward, check MBON's approved NP program list at the same time.
