Michigan in Olivet's disclosures
With Michigan approved, a Michigan resident can log FNP hours without crossing a state line, and a student relocating to Detroit or Grand Rapids mid-program keeps going once the new address reaches the Online Advising Team (see moving during your program). What a Michigan RN license takes
Lansing lawmakers have a compact bill, HB 4246, in the works, but for now Michigan issues single-state licenses only. Your multistate license from Ohio, Wisconsin or Indiana ends at the Michigan border, and a Michigan clinic means applying for a Michigan RN license. Expect three Michigan-specific items in that application:
- Criminal history: a background check
- Human trafficking: one-time training in spotting victims
- Implicit bias: two hours, completed within the five years before your license date
The same logic runs in reverse near the borders. Because the Michigan license travels nowhere, a Michigan nurse eyeing a site in Toledo's orbit or northern Indiana needs that state's license too. Olivet's own rules for the license you train on are on your RN license for clinicals.
Michigan's board, restricted practice and your preceptor
Michigan's rules for approving nursing programs, the series beginning at R 338.10301, are written for schools inside the state, and the board's education page describes no approval or notice step for a school based somewhere else. When a graduate of an out-of-state school applies for a license, Michigan leans on national accreditation (CCNE, ACEN or CNEA) instead of its own approval. Olivet's master's and post-graduate APRN certificate programs hold CCNE accreditation.
AANP files Michigan under restricted practice, because controlled-substance prescribing by an NP runs through a delegating physician. For checking a prospective preceptor, Michigan's NP specialty certification is handy: it requires both an active Michigan RN license and national certification from a certifying body on the board's recognized list. Fit for your course is then settled in Olivet's preceptor approval.
Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint
Census figures for 2025 put metro Detroit near 4.4 million people and Grand Rapids near 1.18 million, with Lansing around 480,000 and Flint around 401,000. Among the big systems are Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health, University of Michigan Health, known as Michigan Medicine, plus McLaren Health Care and Trinity Health Michigan. Rotation policies differ by system and live on each one's site.
Preceptor incentives are thin. Michigan's Office of Nursing Programs, part of MDHHS, once teamed up with MSU's nursing college on a pilot paying incentives to the preceptors of that university's FNP and psychiatric NP students, scaled to the hours each preceptor pledged across two semesters. MDHHS now calls the pilot finished, and it only ever covered MSU's own students.

Yes. In the FNP file Olivet dated March 12, 2026, Michigan appears among the approved states, so FNP practicum hours can happen there. Since Michigan's board publishes no separate step for schools based elsewhere, your planning centers on Olivet's preceptor approval, compliance and each site's onboarding.
I hold a multistate license from Indiana. Can I train in Michigan?
Not on that license alone. Indiana's compact privilege does not extend into Michigan, which issues its own single-state licenses. Plan to apply for a Michigan RN license, with its background check, human trafficking course and implicit bias hours, well before your first Michigan clinical day.
Is this the Olivet school located in Michigan?
No. Olivet Nazarene University is based in Bourbonnais, Illinois, about an hour south of Chicago, and runs its graduate nursing programs online. A separate Michigan college also carries the Olivet name. Michigan residents in Olivet Nazarene's online FNP can complete clinical hours in Michigan, since the state is approved.
Does Michigan pay NP preceptors?
Not through any current state program open to Olivet students. The one paid effort on record, a pilot run by the state's Office of Nursing Programs, served only preceptors working with MSU's own NP students, and MDHHS lists it as finished.
