Olivet Nazarene University's FNP disclosure from March 2026 puts Ohio in the approved column, so an Ohio resident can log FNP practicum hours close to home. One Ohio detail deserves attention before you ask anyone to precept: the statute that lets APRN students practice without a license describes an APRN doing the supervising.

Ohio in Olivet's disclosure files
In plain terms, your FNP clinical courses can run at Ohio sites once Olivet approves the preceptor. Because the file speaks only of the FNP track, a post-graduate certificate student should get a direct answer from the coordinator. Neither NEL program nor the RN-BSN appears on the licensure list; the NEL pages still ask for practicum hours inside an approved state, and Olivet tells RN-BSN students outside Illinois to complete theirs locally. Ohio law and the APRN student
Nothing in the Ohio Revised Code asks a school from another state to register with the Ohio board or notify it. Student practice is handled differently, through an exemption in section 4723.32. Its division (F) reaches students in APRN programs that prepare them for national certification, or for a qualifying master's or doctoral degree, provided the student acts within the program.
That division also names the supervisor: an APRN serving Olivet in one of three roles, faculty member, teaching assistant or preceptor. So if an Ohio physician offers to take you, check with the SON Clinical Coordinator first. Olivet decides on every preceptor through preceptor approval, using criteria kept in your Canvas requirements course.
Collaboration built into Ohio NP practice
Ohio sits in AANP's reduced practice group. Every Ohio NP keeps what the state calls a standard care arrangement, naming a collaborating doctor (a physician or a podiatrist), for the length of their career, and Schedule II prescriptions carry limits tied to setting. Since the NPs you contact already work within that arrangement, ask early who at the practice has to agree to a student; each site runs its own onboarding.
Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Dayton
Instead of one dominant city, Ohio has several big metros. The 2025 census estimates show greater Cincinnati near 2.31 million (close to 1.76 million live on the Ohio side), Columbus near 2.24 million, Cleveland near 2.17 million, and Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek around 830,000. For systems, research OhioHealth in Columbus, Cleveland Clinic, Bon Secours Mercy Health in Cincinnati, the Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University and Cleveland's University Hospitals; every one has its own rules for NP students.
Greater Cincinnati spills into Kentucky and Indiana, both approved by Olivet for FNP hours. To the east, the picture flips. Pennsylvania is one of the 13 states Olivet has not approved, and an Ohio address does not change that for a Pennsylvania clinic.
Your RN license for Ohio clinicals
Ohio's compact membership is recent: implementation came on January 1, 2023. Holding an Ohio multistate license lets you do clinicals in any other compact state, and nurses whose home compact state is somewhere else can practice in Ohio on that multistate license, a group the Ohio board tracks. Questions Olivet students ask
Is Ohio an approved state for Olivet's FNP program?
Yes. In the out-of-state APRN disclosure Olivet dated March 12, 2026, Ohio appears in the approved column, which lets Ohio FNP students do practicum hours in the state with an Olivet-approved preceptor. Anyone switching into the FNP track, or coming back to it, is held to that same list of states.
Can a physician precept an Olivet NP student in Ohio?
Ohio's student exemption in 4723.32(F) is written around an APRN supervising you as faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor. Olivet's preceptor criteria live in the Canvas requirements course, not on its public pages, so put a physician candidate in front of the SON Clinical Coordinator before you plan a rotation around them.
Does Ohio's nursing board have to approve Olivet before my clinicals?
Ohio's statute includes no step where an out-of-state school seeks board approval or files a notice; the 4723.32 exemption covers student practice. Your site may still have its own onboarding, MyClinicalExchange included where the site uses it, and Olivet's preceptor approval applies either way.
Can I train in northern Kentucky if I live in Cincinnati?
Olivet's list allows it, since Kentucky is approved for FNP practicum hours. Both Ohio and Kentucky belong to the nurse compact, so your Ohio multistate license reaches a Kentucky site. Check that site's own student requirements, and if you actually move across the river, send your new address to the Online Advising Team.
