New York and Olivet's nursing programs
FNP practicum hours are not permitted in New York under Olivet Nazarene University's rules. Olivet's FNP disclosure of March 12, 2026 files New York under Not Approved, the group of states where Olivet has not yet made a determination on whether the program satisfies state requirements. You can study online from New York, but FNP clinicals go to an approved state such as New Jersey, Connecticut or Vermont.

Olivet's New York result, program by program
Applicants in New York will find nothing in Olivet's file that bars admission; it limits where FNP hours happen, so plan them across a state line from day one. FNP students living in New York need an approved-state preceptor for every clinical course, and the file gives no reason for New York's listing.
NEL and RN-BSN students have no New York entry. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator which list governs your practicum before approaching anyone; Olivet's licensure disclosures explains both files.

NYSED registration comes before any New York rotation
NYSED, the State Education Department, runs nursing licensure through its Office of the Professions, where the State Board for Nursing sits, and it takes a wide view of clinicals from outside schools. Any nursing program based in another state or taught online needs NYSED registration or approval before its students train at New York sites; federal Veterans Affairs and military sites are the lone exception. NP programs need their own registration, and NYSED tells NP students that training through an unregistered program might break the law.
Its college evaluation office goes further: a clinical placement in any licensed profession puts the school physically in New York, so SARA membership, which Olivet holds through the Illinois Board of Higher Education for its online classes, is not enough, and the Office of the Professions must first approve the placement or grant an exemption. Registration status can be checked at opprogs@nysed.gov. For Olivet FNP students this is background, since Olivet's list already rules New York out. For NEL and RN-BSN students it comes first.
Where New York FNP students train instead
Four approved states border New York: New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. Pennsylvania borders it too, but it shares New York's Not Approved status, so practices there are closed to Olivet FNP hours. The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro already reaches into New Jersey, which makes northern New Jersey the first search area for many city students, while the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area sits within reach of Vermont and western Massachusetts.
Buffalo and Rochester students have the longest trips. UR Medicine, Mount Sinai, NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health and NewYork-Presbyterian are the systems New York nurses know best, and they enter an Olivet student's plans only if the SON Clinical Coordinator clears New York for that student's track.
Your RN license when you cross into New Jersey or Connecticut
New York has joined neither compact, and no Nurse Licensure Compact bill is pending. A license New York issues is therefore good in New York alone: New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont are compact states, but you would need a license from whichever one hosts your clinicals. Massachusetts has passed the compact and aims to implement it in May 2027.

Questions Olivet students ask
Can I enroll in Olivet's online FNP while living in New York?
Yes. Olivet's disclosure limits where FNP practicum hours are completed, not where students live or apply, and Olivet's pages name no state closed to admission. Expect every clinical course to run through a preceptor in an approved state, and budget the travel early. The Not Approved states page lists the other twelve states in the group.
Is New York City close enough to New Jersey for my clinicals?
For many students, yes. The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro spans both states, and New Jersey is approved for Olivet FNP hours. Your New York license stays in New York, so plan on a New Jersey license before your first hour there. The New Jersey guide covers that state.
Would a New York VA hospital count for my FNP hours?
NYSED's registration requirement carves out federal Veterans Affairs and military sites, but that carve-out is New York's rule, not Olivet's. Olivet's FNP file keeps practicum hours out of every Not Approved state and makes no mention of federal sites. Before counting on one, check with FNPpracticum@olivet.edu, which the file lists for out-of-state FNP questions.
I'm in Olivet's RN-BSN and live in New York. Where do my practicum hours go?
Olivet opens its RN-BSN to students beyond Illinois, whose practicum hours take place where they live, and the program has no line on the disclosures page.
