Olivet nursing students in Washington State
Washington is closed to FNP practicum hours for Olivet Nazarene University students. Olivet's FNP disclosure of March 12, 2026 puts the state in its Not Approved group, which signals that Olivet has yet to settle whether its FNP meets Washington's requirements. Washington residents can take the online coursework from home, but FNP clinicals belong in an approved state, and Idaho is the only approved neighbor.

Olivet's Washington entries
Applicants in Washington can enroll and study online, since Olivet's file restricts FNP hours rather than residence. FNP students already living in Washington will need preceptors in Idaho or farther afield for each clinical course, and the file names no reason for Washington's placement on the list.

WABON approval for distance programs
WABON, the Washington State Board of Nursing, keeps a tight gate. Its rule for distance learning programs from other states (WAC 246-840-571) puts board approval ahead of any clinical or practice experience in Washington. Earning that approval takes a formal application, proof of equivalence with Washington's own program standards, supervision and evaluation of each student placed in-state, continued national accreditation and an annual report. WABON's approved list spans RN-BSN, MSN and NP tracks. An approval covers Washington residents only, and WABON weighs any other student individually.
For ARNP students the rule goes further: faculty teaching ARNP practice in Washington hold a Washington ARNP license, and a preceptor may not be a relative or personal friend of the student. Olivet's pages do not say whether Olivet holds WABON approval for any track. WABON opened rulemaking on these sections with a CR-101 filed December 5, 2025, with clinical placement barriers on the agenda, so read the current text before relying on it.
Idaho, and the limits of the Portland metro
Idaho is the one approved state on Washington's borders; Oregon, to the south, shares Washington's Not Approved status. Spokane-Spokane Valley students are best placed, with northern Idaho a short drive east. Those in Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue or Kennewick-Richland face longer trips, and for Vancouver-area students a practice in Portland does not help, because Oregon is closed as well. Some western Washington students plan clinical blocks near family in an approved state.
AANP lists Washington as a full practice state. PeaceHealth, MultiCare, UW Medicine, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and Providence are its largest systems, worth a look only once a track has Olivet's go-ahead for Washington and WABON's approval question is settled. There is a preceptor grant as well, the legislature's Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, which WABON administers; schools from other states sit outside it no matter where hours are logged, and RN-BSN programs are left out of it altogether.
Your license for Idaho clinicals
Washington put its Nurse Licensure Compact membership into practice on January 31, 2024, and Idaho's membership dates to 2018. A multistate license issued by Washington to a Washington resident therefore lets you train in Idaho with no second RN license. Check that yours was issued as multistate, since a single-state license stops at the border. Washington has not enacted the APRN Compact.

Questions Olivet students ask
Can I do Olivet FNP hours in Portland if I live in Vancouver, Washington?
No. Oregon and Washington are both on Olivet's Not Approved list, so neither side of the Portland-Vancouver metro can host Olivet FNP hours. For most southwest Washington students the nearest approved state is Idaho, though some plan blocks elsewhere. The Oregon guide covers Oregon's rules for other tracks.
Can an ARNP I know personally precept me in Idaho?
Washington's bar on related or friendly preceptors sits in its rule for placements inside Washington, so it would not govern an Idaho site. For Olivet's side, look in your track's Canvas requirements course, where its preceptor criteria sit, before you ask; Olivet has the final say on every preceptor. The Idaho site may add conditions of its own.
Does Washington's preceptor grant apply to an Olivet student's preceptor?
No. WABON's grant rules exclude every school based outside Washington, so a preceptor working with an Olivet student cannot claim it, even for hours logged inside the state. RN-BSN programs are shut out of it as well, whatever the school's home state, which settles the question for Olivet's RN-BSN too.
I'm an NEL student in Seattle. What should I check first?
Two things, in order. Ask the SON Clinical Coordinator whether Washington counts as an approved state for NRSG 604 and NRSG 620, since the NEL pages publish no list. Then confirm whether Olivet's MSN track appears on WABON's approved list for out-of-state programs, because Washington requires that approval before any clinical or practice experience starts there.
