The New Mexico Board of Nursing adds two things of its own: an approval rule that switches on when a school's clinicals in the state outlast a semester, and a definition of who may serve as a clinical preceptor.

What Olivet publishes for New Mexico

The one-semester trigger in 16.12.3 NMAC

New Mexico's rule at 16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC works like a stopwatch. Once a school's clinical or field placements in the state stretch past a single semester, that school must seek the board's approval for clinical placement, and approval back home does not excuse it from the minimum standards New Mexico sets in the next section, 16.12.3.12. The surrounding part is written for schools that prepare nurses for New Mexico licenses and says nothing specific about RN-BSN or NP study.

Duration is why an FNP student should care. In Olivet's new curriculum, 750 clinical hours spread over four clinical courses, from adult and older adult care through the lifespan course, so a student who trains in New Mexico from the first clinical to the last will probably pass the one-semester mark. How New Mexico defines a clinical preceptor

Two tests apply to anyone precepting in New Mexico under the board's education rules. The first is time: two years or more as a nurse. The second is rank: the preceptor's license must sit no lower than the one you are studying for, which for an FNP student means an advanced practice nurse. The same rules forbid the nursing program to reward a preceptor financially for a student it assigns.

Any school from elsewhere that wins New Mexico placement approval must meet these standards too, while Olivet's own criteria sit in your Canvas requirements course; where both apply, a preceptor has to clear both. Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington

Albuquerque is the big one, with around 925,000 metro residents in 2025. Farmington, at about 120,000, is the smallest of the next three; Santa Fe has about 157,000 and Las Cruces about 229,000. Statewide names include Lovelace Health System, the UNM Health System (home to the state's lone academic medical center) and Presbyterian Healthcare Services, while the capital has CHRISTUS St. Vincent, a regional medical center. Every system sets its own student terms.

New Mexico belongs to the nurse compact, and multistate licenses there have carried their own board fee since June 1, 2026. A multistate license from Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma or Utah reaches New Mexico clinics. Arizona is the border to watch: it sits on Olivet's Not Approved list, so a Farmington student cannot count FNP hours from a clinic on the Arizona side.

Yes. The FNP disclosure Olivet dated March 12, 2026 puts New Mexico in its approved group. Because New Mexico's board asks programs whose clinicals in the state last more than a semester to seek its approval, check with Olivet how that affects your plan.

Can Olivet pay a New Mexico preceptor for taking me?

New Mexico's education rules rule that out: a preceptor may not take financial rewards from the nursing program for a student the program assigns. Olivet's pages do not describe what its preceptors receive, so questions about recognition for your preceptor go to your course faculty or the SON Clinical Coordinator.

Does my Texas compact license work for clinicals in New Mexico?

A multistate license from Texas carries into New Mexico, which belongs to the compact. Olivet still expects that license to stay current and unencumbered through every clinical hour, and any change in its status goes to the SON Clinical Coordinator.
