NRSG 638C: the pediatric primary care clinical
Olivet Nazarene University's NRSG 638C Pediatric Primary Care Clinical is the third new-curriculum FNP clinical, 135 hours taken with NRSG 638 Pediatric Primary Care. It is the one course of the four built around children, so the search changes shape: you need a primary care clinician with a pediatric panel, in your area and inside an approved state.

What Olivet lists for NRSG 638C
Olivet's New Curriculum handbook gives the course name, NRSG 638C Pediatric Primary Care Clinical, a total of 135 clinical hours, and its pairing with NRSG 638. It comes third in the sample order, after the adult and women's health clinicals and ahead of NRSG 639C. The grade is Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory, and a pass depends on graded work averaging at least 83% plus a satisfactory rating on each logged hour.
Children can appear in one more course. The lifespan clinical, NRSG 639C, may include younger patients as well, but NRSG 638C is the course devoted to them. Its objectives, weekly pace and counted visit types are set in the syllabus and the Canvas requirements course, not published on Olivet's site, so open both as soon as you can.
If you fail either NRSG 638 or NRSG 638C, you retake the failed course and audit its partner, and the audit may call for repeating up to half of the clinical hours.
Who can precept pediatric primary care
Look for a clinician who delivers primary care to children: a pediatric practice, or a family practice whose panel includes enough children to fill 135 hours. Olivet approves the preceptor, with its credential and experience criteria held in the requirements course; see the preceptor approval guide for the published side of that step.
Olivet's FNP disclosure also points out that a licensing board elsewhere may judge your preceptors by standards of its own. If you plan to license outside Illinois, read that state board's rules before you settle on a pediatric preceptor.
Ask a prospective pediatric preceptor

- Whether they can host 135 hours inside your course dates
- Whether the site onboards through MyClinicalExchange or its own process, and what it asks of students
- Whether they can give faculty the input Olivet may request during the course
Timing the search behind two earlier clinicals
By the time NRSG 638C opens you have already completed two clinicals, so the pediatric search has to run in parallel with them. Olivet does not publish a lead time for preceptor approval, which means the safe plan is a pediatric preceptor confirmed well before the course's first week, not during it.
Olivet's program pages ask you to start with your personal and professional networks. After 30 unsuccessful attempts, MSN FNP students may turn to the SON Clinical Coordinator, who can then place them outside their preferred location. The certificate page describes the coordinator's support with no attempt threshold. If the course is weeks away and you still have no preceptor, see need a preceptor fast.
Pediatric sites and your health record
Sites may require more than Olivet does, and a pediatric practice deserves a direct question about its onboarding before you commit. Olivet's own list already asks for immunity titers, a current Tdap, flu and TB records; the immunizations and TB guide explains each one.
If you have declined the hepatitis B or flu vaccine, the handbook asks for a medical statement from a provider, and the site still sets its own terms. A flagged background check works the same way: Olivet tells the site, and the site decides. If the practice uses MyClinicalExchange, finish its steps before your start date, since the platform can add a charge of its own.
Pediatrics in the current curriculum
Continuing students on the current curriculum meet pediatrics in two clinicals. NRSG 665C pairs with NRSG 669 Pediatric Therapeutics & Management for 125 hours. NRSG 665F, the last clinical in that series, pairs with NRSG 672 Complex Pediatric & Women's Health Therapeutics & Management and moves from 120 to 125 hours in January 2027.
That split means a current-curriculum student may need a pediatric preceptor twice: once for general pediatric care, and again late in the program for complex cases shared with women's health. The NRSG 665 guide covers the full series and its hour changes.

Pediatric placements, handled for you
We find pediatric primary care preceptors in your community and within the states Olivet approves, confirm the practice can carry 135 hours in your course window, and ask about the site's onboarding up front so an immunization or document request does not surprise you in week one.

Questions Olivet students ask
Can a pediatrician precept my Olivet NRSG 638C hours?
Olivet's public pages do not say whether physicians may precept FNP students. That rule, along with the other preceptor criteria, lives in the Canvas requirements course, and your licensure state may add its own. Read the requirements course first, then let Olivet's approval confirm the pediatrician before you log any hours with them.
Can I complete NRSG 638C at a school-based health center?
Olivet lists the course as pediatric primary care but does not name qualifying settings. A school-based center, a pediatric urgent care or a hospital clinic could fall outside what the syllabus requires. Ask your course faculty before you approach the site, so you do not spend weeks recruiting a setting the course cannot use.
Do I need extra vaccines for a pediatric site?
Olivet's list applies to every site, and any site may ask for more. Request the practice's student onboarding list early and compare it with what you already hold in your compliance system. Anything extra, such as a site-specific form or badge, is handled through the site's own process before your first day.
Do Post-Graduate FNP certificate students take NRSG 638C?
Yes. The new handbook's certificate sequence runs NRSG 635 and the 3P courses, then the four paired clinicals, NRSG 638 and NRSG 638C among them at 135 hours, and finally NRSG 688. The certificate page describes substantial help from the SON Clinical Coordinator in finding preceptors, with no attempt threshold stated.
What if my pediatric preceptor cancels partway through?
Tell your course faculty promptly and start on a replacement, because the new preceptor also needs Olivet's approval and every hour is due by the last course day. The preceptor dropped out page walks through the steps, and the placement desk can run the replacement search for you.
